Hello,

I'd like to know if anyone uses this child theme, because I'd like to do something like they show in the news them example, but there's something I don't understand. That's why I'd like to be able to ask others how they do.

Thanks.

Ok, thank you for your answers

      It's very simple actually:

      1. Here's the news theme sample page:
      News Theme

As you can see, the last part of the main page (called here "latest fashion news") takes the entire space, it's not divided into 2 sections, like above (where there's "today's heaedline" and "featured music").

I'd like to do the same things in my blog, but I don't know how to do so.
I used the "featured left" and "featured top" widgets, but I'd like to add something else below, something that would be underneath these widgets, and I don't know how. There's no "bottom widget". See what I mean ?

It's hard for me to explain, my english is not that good...

That's the first thing I'd like to do and I don't know how to.

      2. I saw a tutorial on the web and I wanted to do the same thing: I did exactly as she said in the video, but it's not working for me...
I'll explain: on my main page, in the "featured top" widget, I want to have the post of the category called "video". This is ok, I know how to do that.

But below, in the page, in the "featured bottom left" widget, I have all the posts of all the categories. Here, in this widget, I want to exclude the video category, so in the Genesis Theme settings, in the blog page template section, I inserted the id of the video category, in the "exclude category" text box.

But when I refresh my page, the post of the video category I just created is in both parts of the blog, instead of being only once in the page.

      That's all for now.
I hope you'll understand my poor explanations and be able to help...

Thanks for taking the time to read

I was just wondering if my explanations were clear enough...

Please tell me if they're not clear, and I can try to explain better.
    Thanks

The widget/sidebar area your referring to is "home bottom". Drag a featured posts widget in there and customize your widget settings/categories.

Note: In case widget/sidebar raised a question, all widgetized areas of a theme are also called sidebars. The right edge or left edge is commonly thought of as a sidebar, but all widget areas are sidebars.

Thank you David, I finally succeeded with the main page. Actually, the problem was in the version of the theme, the home bottom widget was missing. But now everything's fine, and I even added some code to add a new widget to my theme

I still have a question about the exclude thing.
I saw on the internet a video where someone just excluded a category in the genesis settings, and this category was excluded from the posts of the main page.

I'd like to do that also, but I was told I would have to add a plugin to do that.
    Is this true ?
In the video, the girl didn't use any plugin...

PS: David, is there any list where I could subscribe to be informed when you launch your Plugin Creation Blueprint ?

Go to "theme settings" then scroll down and you'll see the box "blog settings", you can enter category ID's there to exclude them from the blog listing.

Need to find the ID? go to posts > categories and on the right you'll see the categories.
Hover over a category name and the ID will be revealed in the footer of the browser.
If not, there's a ton of ID type plugins at wordpress.org
Just check my signature occasionally for updates. Don't want to elaborate more then that in this forum thread, not the appropriate place.

Yes David, that's exactly what I did, as I explained in one of the posts of this thread.
But still the post of the category appears on the fisrt page, even with that category being excluded. That's what I don't understand.

Of course I could use the Genesis Featured Widget Amplified, but I'd rather do it without installing any plugin if possible.

Any idea of why i wouldn't work ?

You can drag the Featured Posts widget into the sidebar area, and instead of "excluding" there is a setting in the widget to "include". So, just select the category you want to display.
You can drag more then one Featured Post widget in there if you want more then one category to show.

Yes, I know I can do that, and I already use this function.
I'm sorry to bother you... But let me explain again what I have on my first page:

In the first area, I have a widget which displays 1 post from all the categories.
In the second area, I have another widget that displays 1 post from the video category only.

If I post an article in the video category, then i will be the last article posted, and this article will be present on the homepage both in the 1st area (being the most recent post of all categories) as well as in the 2nd area (being the most recent post of the video category). See what I mean ?

        And that's my problem.

That's why, on this first page, I'd like the first widget to display 1 post from all the categories, except the video category. And I thought I could do that with the theme settings, excluding the video category from there, but it's not working...

          Ok, I got it.
I don't think you can do that with the default setup.
The "block categories" only works for the default blog listing page I think, not in the custom widget.
The shortest/fastest route would be to use a plugin.
The longer built-in type route would be to have someone modify the the child theme and add filtering capability to that custom widget. You don't want to modify the actual widget coding since it will be overridden on update, but it can be done in a child theme.

I'd go with the plugin route if you want the easiest way.

OK, I'll do that. I'll use the "Genesis Featured Widget Amplified" plugin.
I just wanted to be sure it couldn't be done with the default setup.

            Thanks again !

I have a related question... is there a way to take the "home middle left" and "home middle right" sections and get a single two-column stream of recent posts?

The way it is designed, it only seems to let you set up two independent streams of posts. However, that only makes sense if you want to segregate the posts by a single category in each column (or stack categories). If you want all recent posts to flow chronologically through a two-column format, there does not appear to be a way to do it.

    Am I missing something basic?

Yes, you're right, I wanted to do that too.

So I created a widget that I called "Home middle wide", below the home middle left and right.
