JPEG is used for photos, while GIF is better used with logos, graphics and cartoons.

When GIF is used with photos, the file (photos) are not as compressed as if JPEG were used.

When JPEG is used with logos, graphics and cartoons the file is not as compressed as with GIF.

In both instances when the image is saved with the wrong type of extension the files can be up to 4 times the size of what it would be if it were saved properly.

This all makes a difference in how fast your pages will load.

Hope this helps.

Alright then, so tell me where PNG comes into play?

I agree that Gifs are better than JPG when there are only a few colors involved.

Not even sure if it's a serious question with the whole basketball thing, but as I can't help myself

PNGs often have a lower file size than GIFs and JPEGs, depending on color count, and they have the cleanest edges when you want a transparent background.

Both GIFs and PNGs have a maximum of 256 colors. When your image has less than 256 colors you'll get best performance out of one of these file types.

However PNGs often look slightly cleaner than GIFs, though it depends from image to image.

When your image has many many many colors, like in a photo, that's where you need a JPEG.

Animations can't be done in PNG or JPEG files, but they can with GIFs.

So here's my rules of thumb:

    JPEG if many colors

PNG if less than 256 colors or transparent background

GIF if needs animation, if less than 256 colors, solid background, and if you happen to find it has lower filesize than PNG without quality degradation
