"nofollow" link for web designers

I'm putting this in the designer forum rather than SEO because I want to see how designers feel about this issue.

I'm using a website template requiring a link to the designer. Of course I have no problem with this. Even though I've modfied the design extensively it still keeps the original "look" so I want to give credit where credit is due.

But how do you feel if I make the link "nofollow"? Is that a slap in the face because the designer's main concern is the link juice? Or does it not matter because what you want most is new customers attracted by the site design?

As a designer yes, I would like to have my link followed. If it's really an issue then I guess it would be a courtesy to tell the designer upfront of what you intend to do.

I had one client before who removed my copyright (without my permission) in the source code of a custom javascript code I created. He never told me about it. When I found out he renamed the codes w/o my copyright, I'm pretty much disappointed. Had he simply told me about it then I'm sure there would be no problems.

So the best and democratic way is to simply tell upfront.
