I want to add some videos to my website, what is the best file type to use?

Is there anything else I should know to successfully host videos on my site? Thank you.

Depending on how many videos, you might be shocked at how much bandwidth you'll burn through by self-hosting them.

On a typical shared hosting plan you may or may not have a bandwidth issue, but you might have a CPU issue if you have a lot of members watching.
Better to use Amazon S3, it's just so cheap.

To make things super easy use a premium plugin to serve from S3 with a built-in player, or use a service like EZS3.

David, you just opened a can of worms. You know I'm going to have a ton of questions for you now.

I want my visitors to be able to view the videos on my website and not have to download them. What is amazon s3?

S3 is an online cloud storage by Amazon. They are cheap and fast.
Here is the signup link and info.

Since your not familiar with it, you really should use a service that does a lot of the work for you like EZS3

They will help you stream and protect your videos and use the Amazon S3 for the storage.
Signup with S3 can be confusing if you haven't used it, but just follow the instructions. It's free to signup and your only charged if you use the storage.

There are many S3 Secure type WP Plugins, but without a little knowledge about Amazon S3 they might be harder to use then the EZS3 service.

But ezs3 is $20 a month. Is there a cheaper option?

Hmmm...not that I know of....might be, but they are a popular service.
The premium plugins for S3 are near a hundred and up.

You could do that. There is also a couple free plugins to help keep your assets on amazon s3. This plugin works with WPv3.5+ and there are more but most are have not been updated for awhile.

If you don't want to watermarket your videos from other popular sites then you have to convert your videos by yourself.

I think this would surely help you..
