Sometimes when a website loads in my Firefox there is a solid block paragraph of spam above the header image of the site. Does that mean my browser is infected or do these random sites have infections?

Can you post some screenshots so we can double verify if the spam text are there as you said?

But then again, if it happens on Google.com , chances are your computer is infected with virus. Time to do some virus scanning.

Are you talking about text that displays in the browser window Title bar- the bar that you use to drag the window to a new location on the screen? If so, the <TITLE> tag of the web page is stuffed with a lot more than the allowed 69 characters.

    • Here is an image (attached). This happens once every maybe 500 website visits.

Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware report my system is clean but...

      Any ideas?

Thanks for posting the image. This is simply hidden text that visitors are not intended to see, but the intent is that search engines WILL see it and index what it finds. This is a black hat technique for improving SEO which is specifically against Google Webmaster Guidelines.

Google has published a 43-page document for use by site reviewers which states that hidden text should be considered a spam factor (with the result that the site rating is negatively impacted).

Good stuff. A year ago I got infected bad despite massive security so now I'm extra cautious. Thanks for the info.

Is this the site you take the screenshot from?

    KnowledgeShift Home Page

Is yes, then your computer is OK. I can see them as well. And they are not hidden text either. It is most likely mean the site is hacked (or infected by malicious script), and the site owner will need to do some clean up on their server. Nothing to worry on your part.

P.S. The site is running WP 3.3.1 . Maybe the other websites also having the same problem are running WP as well?

Yup, that's the one. You're probably right--they may not have updated the core WP.

Sometimes I get comments on my blogs that are like this, sort of. They post a comment that could be to anyone, and then post a spammy link. I am glad I have comment moderation on them, so I can erase them.

Also, if your site is ever infected, spammers can put pages on your site like this that point to other spam sites, like pill sites or whatever.

I'm glad it is not affecting you! I agree with Rufas too, you may want to run a virus scanner too, just to be on the safe side.
