Hi,

I have been looking at premium wordpress themes lately and I like a lot of them. I want to use different wordpress themes on my one website. What are the Pros/Cons of doing such a thing?

Thanks guys.

How have you managed to accomplish this?

The main con that comes to my mind is every time the visitor clicks a page and sees a different theme, they get all confused. I think if you really want things to look different, get a couple different domains and brand them accordingly.

You can only use one theme at the same time. If you want to test your themes one by one, try to switch them in WP-Admin/Appearance/Themes

Only if you have a separate WP install on each subdomain.
      1 install = 1 theme.

Alternatively you could install wordpress in subfolders. i.e. maindomain.com/theme1 ... maindomain.com/theme2

Might be a bit neater than subdomains.

        Says who? (and why?)
There are valid arguments regarding the differences between subfolders and directories... but "neater" is not among them

Maybe it's a personal thing, but I think the url change is less intrusive. To each their own though.

EDIT: To the OP, I've never used this before but might be worth having a look at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/...ultiple-themes

Opinions might be personal things. Knowledge of the facts - is something different...

            1. Read the OP carefully: there is NO URL change - it is about setting up new installations. Nothing to change.

            2. Subdomains are considered a separate (different) site, while subfolders are part of the same site in the 'eyes' of the search engines. Now, that's a difference worth talking about!

            3. Do you know what "intrusive" means?

I think we're on different pages here. I'm talking about the user experience. If the OP wants to have different themes on the same site then I would assume he would want the user to navigate through this one site as a single entity.

The URL change I meant was when a user clicks through from one wordpress installation to another. Again, when I'm navigating through a website, I do notice the URLs of the page, and in that context, a subdomain would be "intrusive" to my user experience because I see it as a separate section of the site instead of just another page of the site.

I know it's an opinion which is why I said it might be a personal thing.

Apologies if I didn't make myself clear, I thought I was in the website design section and not the SEO one. Maybe I should have used "obtrusive" instead of "intrusive"? My English isn't very good.

    Something to consider.
Instead of thinking about different "themes", you should think about different "styles" for various pages, categories, etc..
This is very possible and not overly difficult.

So, if you are on the page or post edit screen, you could select the "style" to be applied to that page.
This is not default, and would require customizing.

Basically you are choosing a custom css stylesheet for that page.
I've seen this in several premium themes and you can quite radically change the look by applying a custom css stylesheet, usually by body class.

You are looking at a lot of overhead and unnecessary work trying to create a new look per page/category by installing multiple subdomains or directories when you could just put the effort into customizing one theme.

As a purely technical exercise, it's very easy to manipulate the active theme on page loads. That's how many 'mobile' plugins work.

From a user perspective, I'd have to opine that it's kind of a stupid thing to do. Users expect consistency, and disorienting visual cues would destroy that.
