How to test speed of new hosting company?

Hi,
I've been doing web design for quite a few years now. When I first started out I chose cheap shared hosting solutions based in US.

I want to move some of my UK specific sites to faster hosting on UK based servers. How can I test the speed of a web host before handing over my money?

Hi you can try this tools(.)pingdom(.)com however not sure if it will also work for the purpose you need, or before you are already using the host server.

Ask for a test IP. You'll really only be able to test the connectivity & response times & network paths..

    You really cannot.
You'll need to buy it, and take advantage of money back guarantees as needed.
    So pick a good host.
Dataflame is a pretty good UK host.
Or you have EuroVPS across the channel in Amsterdam.

You don't care about the hosting provider. What you really care about is the speed at which your website loads. This includes both the hosting provider's response and the number and speed at which every element on a given page loads. You can have an excellent host and a lousy website, and the latter will cause long delays.

I recommend that you test your site using the free Web Page Speed test service at the URL below. It is incredibly detailed and specific.

I recommend using your own dedicated server if you host websites for clients.

I am using a dedicated server located in Germany (hetzner.de). About 50EUR/months.

I have installed everything myself (Debian 6 Netinstall or other OS can be installed) except the OS.

it is hard to test the server performance. besides, if it is good for now, it can be very bad after a few weeks. so you must look at reviews about company. and my #1 rule is "do not choose cheap"

    Thanks for all the replies.

@lanotdesign - yes I've used pingdom before. A useful tool but I would need to get url of a site hosted with the potential new host.

@Kingfish85 - Good idea, thanks for the tip.

@kpmedia - You're right, but its such a hassle to sign up, move sites and then find I have to cancel.

@SmallBizWebsites - I care about both tbh! Thanks for the tool suggestion. It isn't just one site that is slow and I've already run them through similar tools.

@Michael71 - Thanks for the suggestion on going dedicated. I don't have great tech skills or confidence when it comes to servers. Would rather let someone else take on software installation, maintenance and server security etc.

@ZackAllen - yes it seems v difficult to test server performance and my worry is that once I'm signed up them will reduce the resources and everything slows down again!

I've tried speeding the sites up by using a CDN but I think if the host isn't good to start with then I'm on the back foot.

Just go with a top hosting company and you'll be safe. The price difference is what you'll pay later in customers and ROI.
