Okay, I'll try to attach a pic here but if I can't, send me a pm with your email and I'll send it to you.

I've sketched a page layout that I wanted.

I bought the "thesis" theme cause I was told it was flexible and can do anything.

Now I'm being told that what I want is, "taking thesis where it's never gone before".

And/or wordpress in general would need major mods to handle this.

I'm also told that this should be pretty simple.

I'll describe the layout.

header
3 columns with the center one being widest
headline that runs the full with of the page
3 equal columns

I guess the issue comes in with 1. The full width headline and 2. Changing the width of the columns below that headline from what it was before.

Let me know if it's doable or I'm off my rocker.

It seemed so simple, but I'll amend my desires if it's going to cost me a fortune...it's not that important.

If you know of a page layout like this perhaps you can point me in the right direction.

That is very doable, easier if done from scratch.

When I wanted my WP theme customized, I went to rentacoder.com and paid a coder to do it for me. Worked out great.

So that would be my next question then.

If this is doable should I try to find a similar template and tweak that...or do one from scratch?

Opinions?

Guestimates on reasonable cost for each option?

I personally like it from scratch. And if I we're to do it, I would charge $447. You may get a better deal from rentacoder, like Tyler said

I'm just trying to get a handle on this.

To me a theme is how it's "prettified"...colors, images, backgrounds etc...that would lead me to seek someone with a graphics/artistic background.

But the actual layout is a different animal. That would lead me to look for someone with a little more of a tech, css? expertise...

Is this an accurate view of the world?

Tech and graphics are 2 different animals, 2 different skill sets, etc etc..

Yet there seem to be a lot of "theme customizers" around...I suspect they are the first group, the artist.

What I think I need is the second type...the tech...for the layout...

Then once that groundwork is established I can hire an "imaginitive" person to "prettify" and customize for each of my different applications.

I just don't hear people talk in these terms when it comes to WP.

That's why I'm second guessing myself and having such a difficult a time to find #2...the tech guy...who really understands this.

(Folks that need 16 hours don't understand it.)

And of course this all has to have great SEO attributes and functionality

Is this the right mindset?

You are absolutely right. There are folks who are great artist (designers) but not much of a tech guy (they can't code that much). Then there are some who are great with coding but somewhat sucks on design or aesthetics.

I agree there are great designers that suck at coding and I also agree that there are coders that suck at designing but there are the ones of us that are good at both. I suggest that if your gonna do it your self find a free template that's got similarities to what you want and do the tweaking yourself load it on a server and get firefox with firebug. You can tweak the css code to get it where you want it, and if your looking for a designer I suggest looking for one who have multi talents. When looking at there portfolios think could this site have been made buy making cuts and using adobe fireworks to autocode it? Or theres no way this was coded by a graphics program? I would probably stick to someone that does create WP themes and can show examples of them for you.
