Wordpress to create a directory based website?

I have a few ideas to create a an online directory for online and brick and mortar stores in a particular niche, but not sure what web platform I should use. I'm only familiar with Wordpress so I'm not sure what else would work. I thought Wordpress would be good also because I would like it to have some elements of a blog too. It would be part directory, part blog.

Would Wordpress work for this?

As same as you, I'm looking for the plugin that working well to add wordpress ability to be a directory site. So far I was tried a plugin called "Wordpress Link Directory".
If you want to see the live demo how this plugin work you can see my blog page Links Directory | Profitable Guide

You can download the plugin from plugin homepage WordPress Link Directory | SeanBluestone.com

The last version is 1.8.1. with features:

* Automatically checks for reciprocal links on pages specified by Pagerank.
* Displays the Pagerank of all sites in the directory.
* Option to display more detailed information on each link.
* Available in several languages.
* Option to notify the admin when a new link is submitted.
* Integrates seemlessly with WordPress and adopts whichever theme you’re using.

Hi Carla,

This will be easy in Wordpress.

Use the Categories as well Categories (sub-niches), Pages for individual business listings and Posts as you would for normal blogging. Make sure the Categories, Pages and post menu are in your sidebar and that's all there is to it.

Hope this helps

Tim

Try Joomla. I believe that will work better.

Hi Greenandchic

I am using wordpress for my directory | mylink2.com and I am using a plugin called 'odlinks' or 'open directory links' found here: forgani.com.

I looked at using the link directory you mentioned but I wanted to use my own theme and 'odlinks' fitted best for me.

I think at some stage I will create a new directory and use the 'link directory' plugin for that because it has different features I would like to use.

Cheers

Thanks! I've been looking for something like this, too, that's NOT too complicated. I'm pretty much a noob at Wordpress, but I would like to start using it more since it's got so much flexibility.

Displays the PR of all sites in the directory. Option to display more detailed information on each link. Option to notify the admin when a new link is submitted. Categories and Sub-Categories with parenting. Integrates seemlessly with WordPress and adopts whichever theme you're using. WordPress Link Directory is now easy to translate into any language and has a language folder with more info.
