Hello, i will be launching my first self hosted blog soon, so i have few questions about domain registration and web hosting:

1. Do you recommend registering your domain with one company and buying web hosting from another? I have read online that it's best to use separate companies for domains and web hosting.

2. What is whois privacy and should i spend extra money for that?

3. Is it absolutely necessary for domain registrar to be listed on ICANN. Is it possible to lose my domain if the company isn't ICANN accredited?

    As per me,
    1. Domain should be registered from godaddy since they are the best domain registrars and they give a lot of discount for the same.
    2. Hosting can be bought from hostgator which again is the best company for hosting needs.
    3. For whois, you can add privacy from the domain registrar if you want your identity to be hidden.
    Good Luck

Never register with your web host. A dispute with the host can cause problems with your domain registration.

Privacy is a personal choice, do you have an address that you want listed publicly?

My recommendation for registration is name.com. I have been using them for over three years and never had any problems. I have used nodaddy, namecheap and netfirms in the past and now have my 50+ domains at name.com
When I checked their .com: $8.25 for transfers --- $9.25 for new and renewals they have a free privacy if you use a coupon code. "PRIVACYPLEASE"

When you are buying anything there check at http://www.retailmenot.com/view/name.com for current discount codes. You cannot use 2 coupons in one transaction, so buy/renew a domain with a coupon and once the transaction completes go back immediately and get the whois privacy.

It is possible to lose a domain if the company isn't ICANN accredited. Even if it is accredited your domain could be tied up for a period if the registrar goes out of business. If the domain expires while they sort things out, no telling what can happen.

    1. I use GoDaddy (also NameCheap and Net4.in) for domains. All are great domain registrars. From my experience, GoDaddy & Net4 don't provide the best hosting. I use HostGator for my hosting. I also use their service for my hosting reseller business at YesRack.com

    2. Whois privacy is good if you don't want to disclose your identity as owner of the domain/website. Namecheap offers free WHOIS privacy with domains for 1 year.

    3. You should only go with a reputed domain registrar as your asset is held with them. Going with the best registrar doesn't cost you more money. If you use GoDaddy coupons, you can get domains (1st year) for $1-10.

If you sign up for web hosting, just register your domain with your host. If you later want to add more domains to your account, it is probably better (and cheaper) to use a registrar like Domain Names | The World's Largest Domain Name Registrar - GoDaddy.com.

I recommend GoDaddy for domain names and Hostgator for hosting. These services are great and the prices are extremely competitive. Normally you can find a great deal because these companies are massively aggressive and always offer many promos and specials.

HostGator is offering a 20% off, no coupon promo right now and below are a couple codes for GoDaddy (I cannot guarantee they still work but if not just pull up Google and search).

      HINCH199 : $1.99 domain name
      scott249 : $2.49 domain name

I also recommend you register a .com, but if unavailable .net or .org. Keep in mind geo-targeting and gTLDs (like .ca if you are targeting Canada)

      More info:
      Google gTLDs

As for the whois privacy, its a personal choice. It is not necessary and you can use a business address when you register. If you are concerned about privacy then it may be something to consider but in today's world you really are your own brand and one way or another your info will be somewhere online, especially if into internet marketing.

Always register with a reputable registrar. GoDaddy is one of the biggest and the best for domain names.

Hope this helps. Just my 2 cents. All the best in your endeavors friend.

That is right. This will make life easy, have 100% control over the site and move to another host very easily. Changing hosts would be hard if you use the host for domain registration as well.

Buy it if you really want to keep your contact info private and do not want anyone to associate your name with the site. This is not a must, only if you want.

It is better to register directly from an ICANN approved registrar. All major registrars (like godaddy, namecheap) will be approved. Others will be resellers of approved registrars. You are likely to get the cheapest rate if you go directly and they are going to be more reliable than small resellers who might shut the shop tomorrow.

    1. It is not necessary to have domain and host at separate provider, some hosting providers offer free domain registration with web hosting purchase, claim it and later you can transfer

2.It is not necessary to have who is protection, who is protection hides you personal info from who is pages and it gives extra layer of security.

    3. Better to go with ICANN accredited registrar, don't take risk
