Site Silo structure with Clickbump or any Wordpress Theme

I've been trying to understand silo structure for over a month now. Every time I think I grasp the concept, I find myself confused again.

I purchased Clickbump theme because I had read it was good for laying out the silo structure using posts instead of pages with hierarchy and silo landing pages as categories.

Clickbump really does seem to be a very good structure.

Does anyone here have experience with siloing or using Clickbump?

I have some questions on how the homepage works to transfer linkjuice to the category landing pages and then how to layout the category subpages and articles to link back to home or silo landing pages to keep the link juice flowing. I don't want to end up diluting juice by allowing it to leak into other categories.

I would love to have someone talk to me about this stuff to help me understand it more.

I've been working on retrofitting my existing site and creating another one from scratch using this method and theme. I just could use some advice and be able to pick some brains that know WAY more than I do on this.

Hope someone will take pity on my poor intellect and help me out!

Thanks in advance,

Michelle

    Hi @MichelleN and @eternalwarrior:

I wrote a short post about this very topic back in March as a comment on the Clickbump blog, which you can read here:

    ClickBump 6.5 Preview

I'm also working with Scott to put together a nifty demo of this exact capability in action, which should make it clear why Clickbump is the best way (IMHO) to build such silo sites.

PS - I am not affiliated with Clickbump in any way, other than as a happy paying customer and avid user.

    Cheers,
    Taylor

Creating silo from pages is not that difficult. The whole creating silo from post looks complicated. I have never used clickbump but I would definitely like to know more.

Silo is easy if you think about it this way.......

I was a googler and Silo along with Latent Semantic Optimization is the real deal.

Silo needs a category......structure......think back to school and organizing food groups

      bread - Whole Grain - Wheat -
      Meat - Angus - Steak
      Meat Angus - Hamburger

      This is a structure start.

However, structures are also made up by Google......Google has proprietary data that traditionally proves to have great content.

How do we find glimpses of Silo info on google?

On the bottom of Google Search we see "Searches related to"

This can help us find silo structure. Silo never works with out good content.

LSO/LSI Latent Semantic Optimization is the second trick to good Silo work.

Type in "~plumbers" into the Google Search it will give you bolded words. This is another top level silo hinting tool. I drive my Sites to the top of search in less than a month by using Silo with LSO. I routinely capture top search for top level keywords doing this.

Istvan Horvath, whom I believe moderates here, publishes information about silo sites. I see them mentioned on his blog

The good news is that you don't need specific Wordpress themes to properly implement silo structures. Stardustpoint definitely has the right idea. It is all about creating hierarchical Menus from your Categories (and keyword research of course) and you can do that with any Wordpress theme.

Silos help if you have already mapped your keywords. Too many jump straight into silos without a proper planning and then see dismal results. Getting a plugin will not achieve anything unless you know how to make it work.

To implement Silos well, I always start with keyword mapping, as in searching for keywords and map their relationship so we have a blueprint on how each article is linked. Then we simply link them according to our plan to become silos. As long as the articles are linked well and hierarchy is clear, it will help boost navigation, average time on site and eventually lead to higher ranking. I am using our own SEOPressor to do the siloing (internal linking module).

The rule of thumb is: All pages should be reachable, within 3 clicks from the homepage. As long as you have this taken care of, you are good.
