Need help viewing a Joomla site locally

Hi,

I was given a back up of a website made in Joomla and need to view it for reference on a new website being developed. I installed (new install) to a test site and then copied backed up site files and hoped it would go. I didn't and so tried several other options afterwards - basically I'm hung on the db access error. I've never used Joomla and getting tired of watching Youtube videos.

All I really need is to see the site temporarily. I just need some text from the some pages... Is there a local Joomla editor that can be installed on a pc and just view site without having to upload to the Internet?

You have to install apache server to your computer. It's a pretty easy process, just download and install xampp. Once you have xampp installed, you'll have to navigate to /localhost in your browser, and then click phpmyadmin. From phpmyadmin create a database, then import the joomla database. Create a database user, assign it to the joomla database, and give it full control. Once you've done that, edit the config file for joomla to point to your local database.

  Thank you! I think I got all that; it seems simple, maybe not easy. But this is a good start... after this weekend, I won't be able to say, "I haven't done that before". I appreciate the direction logblog

You can also try WampServer - I found it easier to use than xampp.
