Does Google Analytics clash with other web site trackers?

Hi Guys,

Was wondering if GA can work seamlessly with other web site trackers like clicktale, crazyegg etc. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Have some clients I want to install GA and some other tracking tools on their sites to cover some stuff GA doesn't. Tried searching google for answers but couldn't really find anything useful.

Any info will be appreciated.

Cheers,

Kunle

There is no risk in running GA with other web tracking tools. In fact, I would recommend installing two web analytics tools on any website, as it allows you to compare counts and and provides an added layer of confidence that your pages are correctly tagged.

In the event that a user quickly jumps to another page, there is a possibility (depending on page load time) that only one of the web tools (whichever is placed at the top of the page) will record the page visit.

Hope that helps and good luck!

Have a look at the homepage of CNN, NY Times, etc.

You'll find 10-15 trackers, minimum, running at the same time.

They don't interfere with each other at all. Businesses instrument their website with multiple trackers for multiple purposes (ad tagging / retargeting, audience measurement, general analytics, campaign tracking/attribution, A/B or multivariate testing, real-time editorial dashboards, etc).

      Hi Sina & Dan,

Cheers for your responses. I was actually on a tight deadline with the site I was setting up and went ahead to install more than one analytics tool before seeing your responses and it seems to work just fine. I was sure that'd be the case but got concerned when I saw some mention some place online that GA is a little temperamental. Seems that was all hogwash thankfully.

      Regards,

  • Kunle,

It is not entirely accurate that multiple tracking scripts will not interfere with one another. Yes multiple tracking programs can be used but if they use JavaScript to retrieve and send data, they can cause issues with one another if variables are the same. While it is unlikely that the default snippets of most tracking platforms will have the same JavaScript variables, you can customize many services and if you inadvertently use the same variables in tracking code customizations, you could cause issues with tracking.
In a nutshell, it is unlikely but completely possible for tracking scripts to interfere with one another.

    Best,

    Shawn
