Hi,

I saw this on various sites in the source code:

Code:
<meta name="google-site-verification" content="wpX93JW748ldk032KA3o92Dlik37Hbt456jH2oI56w" />
What is it?

Some sort of a "verification", but for what exactly?

I don't remember ever using anything like this. I first through of the verification code for Analytics, Webmaster tools, but that was a different file...

What's this for? :confused:
#code #meta #source
  • It is the verification tag for google webmaster tools. It's one of the verification option, the other is to upload an html file, and I think there is another option as well...but I always use the meta-tag option. It's the easiest, since the Yoast SEO plugin I use on inserts it automatically.

      I never use the meta tag for google verification, just extra garbage on the pages. The file upload satisfies G and nobody sees any of it.

      ...Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just set there.

        Meta tags are fine. If your worried about junk on a page, meta tag is the last place to look. As a programmer and former googler, meta from google can have a great benefit to your site. The page to verify is fine too but but google is specific on searching for meta first and any site speed issues (yes it takes time to find a page and meta tag is quicker) just might effect your rank a little.

        I would put the meta in the header.
