A noob question, for cosmetic reasons, can we code out the "Powered by wordpress or theme maker" at the footer or do they *have* to be there?

    There is no legal requirement for you to keep it there.

    I remember when I used to use Joomla templates there was a company that required you to keep it there, or pay more for 'copyright removal'. With regards to the "Powered by Wordpress", I beleive you are ok to remove that. With regards to the "Powered by [insert theme company here]" you should really check with that company first.

    For you to remove that footer, you should consult the theme maker first or contact them for approval of your intention. Thats the best and most legal way to do that.

      You should use css.
      You have to find your right html way and for example:

      #footer #copyright {display:none;}

    You need to read the license for your theme and abide by the terms.

    ...Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just set there.

      Powered by wordpress can be removed with out license issue's in the footer.

      Powered by "Theme xyz corp" template may have issues. Wordpress is opensource and thus the terms can be moved out of the script.

    I believe it all depends upon the theme maker. But I usually changed and delete the powered by (theme maker) at the source code.

    If you are using a theme, there may actually be a simple way of turning it off within the themes admin panel.

    "Powered by WordPress" can be removed but "Powered by Theme Maker" depends on the terms documented by your theme provider.
