Filezilla overwriting problem

Hi folks.
I have used filezilla for about five years, not everyday. Just when needed.
Today I uploaded an html page to a new website.
Then I uploaded it again with an alteration.

The file will not overwrite. It reverts to the first one.

I deleted the first one within Filezilla and then uploaded the new one. Again the old version reappeared.

I checked out on the Filezilla forums and this is a known issue. but none of the answers give a clear solution.

Does anyone know what is going on and how to overwrite this file?

Thanks

KenJ

Don't know what's going on, I would try renaming the file on the server.

file.html to fileold.html and then upload the the new file.html.

To preclude browser cache issues, you might try renaming the old, and first uploading file-new.html, checking file-new.html and then renaming file-new.html to file.html.

      Thanks Robin,

That's a good idea. I'll do that. It's only one page

It might also be a permissions issue. You may not have the rights to overwrite the file so Filezilla doesn't either. As you try to upload, read the output in the viewer/log. It should say whether the write was successful or if there was a permission problem.

    Well that did not work.
    I deleted the file completely.

Lets say it was called 'download.html'. File size 3168

Then I uploaded the renamed file 'Thankyou.html'. File size 3135.

I now have showing on the server 'Thankyou.html'. file size 3168

So Filezilla has recognised the file even though I renamed it.
    Very confusing.

As regards permissions, I can change them within filezilla, but what do I change?

If your webhost has live chat support, I 'd go there, if not open a support ticket. There should be no way for what you describe to happen.

An alternative would be to have someone else take a look at the problem.

Or you could use the cpanel file manager.

If the ownership of the file is set to the web host administrator you can't change the permissions from Filezilla. It may LOOK like you did but you didn't. The same goes for deleting, renaming, etc.

The first step would be to try to rename it or delete it and pay attention to the box at the top of the screen (at least on my version) where it records all the activity in real-time. You should be able to see if the rename or delete happened. If it is a permissions issue it will also tell you this.

If you do see the permissions error try to change the permissions to 777 in FZ and check the box as it's doing it. If it didn't take then you need to contact your webhost and tell them the name of the file and that you need to be given ownership of that file. Then you'll be able to manipulate it from FZ.

Tried again today using Cpanel file manager. The old version loaded up. same as with Filezilla.

I know this is not possible. but it truly is what is happening. Awaiting return from hosting support.

I'll be climbing the wall wondering what was going on. Let us know what they find out.

The solution as suggested by hosting support is convoluted.... but it worked.

        1. I deleted the file using Cpanel File manager
        2. Waited a while (I waited an hour)
        3. Then I uploaded the replacement file using Filezilla.

The correct file is now on the server.

Thanks for the suggestions and ideas. We got there. But I am running 48 hours late on this project now
