In the last three days I've had over 1,600 self referrals, so I looked in my logs and it's my website referring images (and some pages) to multiple ip addresses in Singapore, mostly.

So why are my images causing so many self referrals, does it mean that some other site is displaying or downloading my images?

Or they are likely scrapping your site for content. Or loading your images on their sites.

    Could cost you some bandwidth.

Best would be to cut it off with htaccess. It's been so long since I've done it, I don't remember the code. Sure some one here will chine in. I'll look myself.

Scrapping I guess, because if my image was loaded on another site would that cause a self referrer?

Anyway I can search and find code to block them, there are several different ip addresses, will they just get new ones?

Is that what I do try and block ip addresses from Sinagpore?

edit: so they are going directly to the image? and downloading it I guess, so if there is a way to just block the images folder from direct access maybe that will work?

let me know if you have any ideas and thanks Ron!

It's actually called hotlinking. Other people hot linking your images, loading them from your server to display on their own server. Least that's what it seems like.

The best way is to use .htaccess to prevent it.

    Here are a couple links:

Prevent hotlinking of images - How to hotlink protect

Comprehensive guide to .htaccess- Preventing hot linking of images and other file types

Just make sure to get the code right.

Also, if you have the regular cpanel, I believe there is an option in there to set this up for your domain.

You could block IP's, but they usually vary, it's not just one IP every time. Could be a range of many IPs.

    Hope that helps
