The answer to my question is probably simple but it's confusing the hell out of me! :confused:

I'm going to create an opt-in box on my WP site for visitors to sign up for a free download. Okay so far..But where do I keep the download?

Obviously you give them a link, but does that link go to my WP site or what? If so, do you keep that page hidden?

    If your media is small enough you can just upload it to your WP media library and link to it. If it is too large you can zip it and FTP it wherever you want then link to it.

    I would create subdirectory of the wordpress site.
    Obviously you give them a link, but does that link go to my WP site or what? If so, do you keep that page hidden?
    The link goes to the download, whether or not you hide it is a matter of preference, I would definitely at least make the link to the download nofollow/noindex so it doesn't show up in searches.
