Hello, I would like to create a website with two language available I was wondering if it was possible to do this with a wordpress theme (for instance thesis I heard it's a good one) or should I use something more technical like joomla ?

If I make my website with one or two language would I still be able to add another language afterwards ?

any help would be greatly appreciated !

You will need a language file to do this. I am sure you can find a wordpress plugin that does language file support for this exact need. One example:
    wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-language/
You can probably find one for users to change the site language as well.

It would probably be best to create a subdomain and 2 separate websites.

For example: http://yoursite.com and http://de.yoursite.com if you were having English and Deutsch versions. The pages/posts should be translated/rewritten by a human and the page /post titles optimized for SEO separately in each language.

Add another subdomain if you do a third language.

Translation plugins, or any automatic translation system, result in low quality content which will lead to high bounce rate which will hurt your SEO.

The main purpose of qTranslate plugin is to provide a friendly interface/system to manage multi languages site.

Yes the plugin provide auto translation but by default you need to manually write each language version of the content, plus it also offer a paid human-translation service .

thanks alot everyone who contributed to this thread, I will check it out.

The thing I wanted is to be able to have a small button to change language on top, not that it's very important, what is important is geolocalization to make sure french users does'nt end up on a english page or something.

Actually, the plugin mentioned first in this thread is the crappy one - relying on automated machine translation... which at this stage of the human development is sh*t.

The second one enables multilingual content and management in multiple languages.
Today, that's the best free solution for a multilingual blog - provided the content is translated by humans, as it should be.

For paid solution look into > WPML - The WordPress Multilingual Plugin

No, geolocalization shouldn't be "the most important" stuff. Sorry.
The most important stuff is that YOU understand how multilingual sites work and - if it was WordPress - how can you create it, what kind of tools are available and useful for the task.

Geolocalization is not a reliable method in today's global settings. People travel (so IP-based "identification" is not a sure thing) and furthermore, browser settings - i.e. language selection in browsers - is also not relevant.

Look ionto creating real multi- or bi-lingual site with readable human translations and just display the language switcher. People are not that dumb... they will be able to select their desired language.

Mmh yea let's hope but I thought geolocalisation could be nice.

And you mean auto translated or ? because I would'nt trust such a thing

And yea but I'm thinking now if they use google or some other search engine they should be directed to the right page anyway so geolocalisation shouldn't be such a problem.

Perhaps I should just look in the free plugin see if there is something first also ..

      Thanks for you help.
