Wordpress Help Needed (newbie)

I'm trying to help a friend make some changes on their WP web site, but I'm stuck on a couple of issues. (the person who had been taking care of it left without notice so I cannot ask them).

I have my own WP blog on a hosted domain, so I'm familiar with the basic WP admin panel, plug ins, etc. But I'm at a loss on two issues:

1) I cannot find where to access the Home page (in this case, his "Welcome" page). It is the first page you see when you go to his url. On the WP dashboard, under Pages, it is nowhere to be found!

2) He is using a WP calendar plugin (I tried to find the version, etc, but cannot). It only says 'Calendar' on the left hand menu, and the page editor shows {calendar} as the only entry. I'm trying to delete past events (webinars that show up in the far right hand sidebar of the site). But the plug in appears to only let me add new events, not delete past events. Any suggestions?

Like I said, I have basic familiarity with the WP admin setup but I am a newbie at WP, so any and all help is appreciated! If you need more information please let me know. Thank you!

    1st Issue

Go into the WP Admin and see what Wordpress says under "Reading Settings" for the **Front page displays**

    2nd Issue
You probably just go into the DB and delete the calendar events if there no way to delete them in WP ADMIN. Might want to consider a different plugin for events that allows for better administration of events.

You need to look under Settings->Reading->
    Code:
    Front page displays
    • Your latest posts
    • A static page (select below) Front page: Posts page:
That will tell you what's on the front page

It sounds like a custom or premium theme.

Once you figure out what theme it is, you should be able to get the documentation from the theme author to figure out where to change things, but if that's not an option then:

1.) One of my clients homepages is done with "widgets" so look in Appearance > Widgets and see if there are any text boxes in there that contains the contents of the homepage

2.) Another is done in theme options which is usually
a.) Appearance > Theme Options, or
b.) Theme Name (in the menu, usually the last one on the list)..
If that's the case, there will be a special section in there for the homepage
(or a page that isn't called "Home", see Settings>Reading that has already been suggested)

3.) If it's really custom, it might of been done with code (I don't know anyone who would do this anymore, but I've seen it done..) if that's the case, you can see it in Appearance > Editor and look for index.php or home.php etc.

With the calender, it could be a plugin.. check in Plugins > Installed Plugins and look for something relating to a calendar. From there, you should be able to access the plugin developers page to find out more about how it works.

It would be 'weird' if you couldn't edit the calender from the backend... but..
It could be they used an 'iframe' way of inserting the calendar. Like from a website that they go to separate website altogether and it automatically updates on the page with the { calendar } shortcode. But in any case, if it's not in-built into the theme, finding out the plugin will lead you in the right direction.

Everything should be made easier by figuring out which theme they are using though so go to What WordPress Theme Is That? with your siteurl, and it will tell you what theme the website is using.

what theme does your friend use ?
      Regular theme or premium theme?
if regular theme or default wordpress theme such as twenty ten up to thirteen, the explanation above should be able to help you.

But if premium theme, then you must learn its features first, because each premium theme has its own settings

Is it possible to disable the calender plug-in to see what the functionality of the website is at that point?

    1) Probably you don't have a specific WP page selected to be your homepage. In this case your site shows your latest posts and the file that you need to edit to make changes is index.php from your theme folder

    2) Go to plugins and see what plugin he is using. Search the plugin on wordpress.org and see if is still updated regularly. If not then I think your should change the plugin. Also you have the option to search for a better calendar plugin if this one doesn't do what you want.

    I hope it helps.Good luck!
