I'm about to do a rework of a content site. It's currently a blog style format, but getting 80% bounce rates.

I know. Ridiculous.

It's an old theme, old design. Likely design is playing a huge role in the high bounce rates.

Anyone have some tips or guides on design elements that reduce bounce rate?

The theme would not be causing bounce rates as much as the content.
    1 A compelling headline.
    2 A compelling first sentence.
3 An entertaining post keeping in mind the object of your post.

    Example start:

It could also be bringing in the wrong traffic. Examine the logs/reports for the keywords + phrases used to find the site -- do they relate to the content?

Unless you clarify where your traffic is coming from... not likely.

Write eye catching titles and interlink your posts. That might help.
