Hi Friends,

I noticed that Canvas has been around for Years...but you start with a plain theme to work with. It apparently is very versatile though.

U-design and Avada are the 2 highest and best selling Theme-forest themes. They are flexible too...and seem to come pre-loaded with many functions and sliders in place.

I know that learning each theme has a curve....sometimes a steep curve and I WANT TO AVOID that in the future. IN OTHER WORDS, i want to learn a theme with the most versatility for future designs.

I know that ONE THEME will not be able to do everything, but i have noticed that some a WAY more flexible than others.

Anyone have experience with any of these Themes?

thanks for your input!

I have used canvas to build 3 websites. It is great and has a lot of flexibility, but is by no means the 'perfect' choice for everyone.

The best theme for you will depend on a variety of factors, and every theme has its trade offs.

Here are a few popular choices along with there tradeoffs- from what i understand:

-- Genesis -- fast loading, bare bones, framework -- it is a great platform if you are a web developer with a solid understanding of HTML / CSS and know how to make changes to the themes appearance on your own. However, if you do not want to do your own mods- Genesis does not offer easy to use dashboards for customization that some other themes do.

Canvas - Loads at a medium speed, has lots of built in customization options for people that dont know html / css. But, there will inevitably be things that you want to customize which require the use of html / css-- which begs the question, if you are going to have to do custom mods - why didnt you just use a lighter weight, faster loading framework-- such as genesis-- in the first place?

PageLines / Headway - These themes are extremely customization without any knowledge of html / CSS. However, they are also big and bloated (from my understanding) and load much slower than the speedy Genesis theme. Maybe a good option for people that never want to deal with coding and never plan to hire a developer.

I got my start using Canvas, but i feel that I have outgrown it to some degree. My next site will be built using Genesis.

pardon any typos - i type fast and dont proof read

ps -- Thesis is also a popular choice that allows a large range of customization, however it has a very steep learing curve, I am told.

    @pvijeh

thanks for letting me know about the loading speed of some of these themes. I also feel that download speed is largely affected by your server. If you are on a shared server...it sometimes makes sense to have them move you to another server that is not bloated.

I'm leaning towards U-design. It seems to be the one of the olderst ones----and has lots of features. I haven't heard many people complaining about it.

I've used Canvas quite alot but I would probably pick something else right now though. The reason for that is that I quickly started to customise more then what was possible in the theme options with css like pvijeh mentioned.

It's a good choice if you're an absolute beginner beginner like I was though. I don't know the standard customisation of those other themes, maybe those have plenty of customisation options as well.

Just like you, I started with canvas when i had no knowledge of css or html. It was a good choice back then, but i think now I can use a lighter framework and do the coding myself. (which i ultimately had to learn / do anyway).

I also put in another vote for Genesis, big reason that you can create child themes to customize the site how you want. One of the better starter platforms I've come across.
