Learning how to make a website

Learn a little html- enough that you can hand code a very simple page.
Now learn some css- enough that you can pass the online tests on the free tutorial sites and alter other people's sites in your browser using firebug.
Now install wordpress as on a test site and play around. Stay with the default themes until you understand them a little.

Wordpress is usually the best way to go when starting out. Then there no need to "make" a website

Spend time marketing and promoting rather than building websites.

You should learn html and photoshop first to make static pages then you can go for any dynamic scripting to make dynamic websites

Its all about what kind of website you want to create. Is it a blog, where you keep it updated with things you like to talk about? Is it a small business website where you want to put up a business and expose it and your phone number on the internet, or is it something else?

If it's a blog you're looking for, get yourself started with either Blogger or Wordpress. Blogger honestly has a beginner feel to it and I believe its a lot easier to use and get used to than Wordpress. Wordpress is the best, but probably not something for a beginner beginner.

For small business websites and such, get your hands on a template in HTML and make sure it has CSS (a style sheet).

A style sheet is pretty much a file that stays next to your website files. What it does is it tells the website all the fonts, font colors, font sizes it's allowed to use and does many other things. It contains all that information so you don't have to beef up your .html documents with so much extra code.

But as for small business websites, I don't usually like to tell people to use Wordpress, and such as small websites like that are not meant to be updated as frequently as a blog would. You should be good to go with an html and css based configuration.

Lastly, a big thing you need to know about is that each website must have a domain. Domains are not free. Thankfully with Wordpress and Blogger, they give you one. The catch is, it's going to look something like xxxyournameherexxx.blogger.com or xxxyournameherexxx.wordpress.com. But both websites will give you the option to buy a domain. I use GoDaddy. I love GoDaddy and their customer support is ridiculously amazing.

With blogger and free hosted wordpress.com blogs, you do NOT control the sites. They are NOT really yours and could be deleted or removed without warning. Not that it happens often, but it is possible. For messing around or testing, they are fine, but they are NOT something you'd want to build a real business on.

Also free hosted blogs on wordpress.com do not allow advertising or marketing, they WILL delete your blog in a heartbeat.

Just start with reading an HTML e-book (course)
After you know HTML, try CSS and then you have a good base!

Wordpress is a great place to start. Blogs are indexed by the search engines quickly and their is a lot of free support for them. You Tube is a great place where you will find 101 answers on how to get your blog into the, 'Stratosphere'. Also their is a lot of free information out their. You do not need to, 'Pay To Learn' udemy.com offers some free courses, admittedly most are paid. Just spend a little time and sift through. Make sure to back your blog up. I learnt that the hard way. Back ups are not as slow as having to start again from scratch. Forewarned is Forearmed. Don't know how to back up? Just you tube it. You will get your answers. Hope that was of help. Learn some CSS, then you can build basic pages and understand how they are build.
Then you can lean, practice.. about wordpress, because it is the most used cms.
