Website Ranking Dropped Any Ideas?

I designed a website for my partner over 4 years ago which has always ranked in the first 2 or three listings and never off the first page of google. The site is for boarding kennels.

In August and September it dropped to page two and now it has virtually dissapeared ie not in the first 10 pages. Hence visits are getting less, less than 50% of last years.

I have done little to change the site except to upload some pictures to a visitors page which I thought would help in getting more search terms.

Also it used to rank no.1 in Googles area map but that's gone way down too.

The site is http://www.challandsfarmboardingkennels.com
The general search terms I've tried to rank for are : nottingham boarding kennels, notts boarding kennels, nottinghamshire boarding kennels and the other way round (boarding kennels nottinghm etc.)

Any ideas as to why and how to reverse the trend would be most appreciated!

I had the exact same problem. I was ranking #3 on page one, now on page 5, and I don't know why? Some of the sites that are beating mine are really cheap and nasty...any ideas?
Site: St Thomas Boat Rentals, St John Boat Rentals, Pirates Paradise Adventures

General keyword: St Thomas boat rental

Well, according to your description, the site was probably hit by algorithm updates. There are 2 major algorithm updates in Aug. Here are the details:

August 6, 2013: Google added a new type of news result called "in-depth articles", dedicated to more evergreen, long-form content.

Hummingbird — August 20, 2013: Hummingbird has been compared to Caffeine, and seems to be a core algorithm update that may power changes to semantic search and the Knowledge Graph for months to come.

Check your site stats to see whether there is huge traffic loss around these two days. If it was, it will be certain that your site was penalized by Google.

BTW, there are only a few backlinks for the site, so backlink is not the case. Personally, I think the traffic loss is mostly due to site content.

Google announced its penguin algorithm update on 6 Oct 20113. Most of the websites hit by this update. That's why most of the website's ranking get down. You can check out more details about this on Moz.

Google will always be updating and coming out with new named updates. This will keep killing sites. Welcome to the wonderful world of SEO...

I just took a look at it. Here are a couple of quick things you can change that should boost your Google ranking.

1- Change the file name of each of your pages to match your keywords. Example- Your pages for "take a tour", "location", "shop" have the same file name as the link (challandsfarmboardingkennels.com/location.html. Change them to something like http://www.challandsfarmboardingkenn...lam-Notts.html and http://www.challandsfarmboardingkenn...el-prices.html etc. That will help a tremendous amount.
    2. I noticed that the file names of the pictures on there are generic. When your photo file names match your keywords of the content of your site, it helps your ranking. So save each photo from the site, rename it with a file name that matches your content and then upload it to replace the current photo/s.
    3. Lastly, your alt tag descriptions for your photo's (shows when you mouse over the pics) also are not keyword rich. Change those too.

Those three things should boost it back up in Google.
