Question on pointing domain to servers

Hi everyone,

I am new to web building and thank God I found this forum because it's a huge source of great information.

My background in in graphic design not web building but I have built a few Wordpress sites in the past and I really enjoy it. So now I have a friend that wants a site built. He owns his domain.

In the past I have had sites built for me and I pointed my domain to the servers of the web builder's. So now if I want to build a site and I do not have the domain, how do I build the site to have a client point their domain to?

Where do I build the site? On what domain?

I understand that the domain has to be pointed to my Go Daddy servers but that about as much as I understand.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks - Baxter

You need to purchase hosting or have the client do it.

Shared hosting should be adequate to start. I came up with a short list of shared hosting providers that seem reasonable and don't get many bad reviews:
    Glowhost
    Frog Host - Web Hosting
    Site5 Web Hosting
    Siteground
    JaguarPC
    Arvixe
    PacificHost

I moved several of my sites to Glowhost, because they seemed to be the best deal for me. They handled the relocation of more than 20 sites without a glitch, no downtime.

Hostgator, Hostmonster, Bluehost, Ipage, JustHost and FatCow are all heavily promoted hosts that are owned by EIG and are all hosted in the same datacenter owned by EIG and are quickly gaining a reputation for bad customer service and lousy performance.

As far as i understand, you can create a site on any subdomain & let your client take hosting, buy domain, point to server & then you transfer files on that server.

test.yoursite.com - keep it for testing until you transfer it.

Thanks for the replies and good info guys. Very cool.

I don't think I explained my situation well enough...

      - I have hosting via Go Daddy.
      - My friend has his domain via 1 and 1
      - I want to build his site on my hosting account and have him point his domain to me.

I want to build the site using Wordpress using my Go Daddy account without transferring the domain.

Can I build his site on a on a sub domain in my account (Go Daddy) and have him point his domain to my servers?

If yes... Will my sub domain show up in the URL?

I'm trying to build the site and retain a monthly hosting charge without owning the domain.

      Ideas?

      Thanks Again!

It sounds like you need to have your friend point his name servers to your Go Daddy account. I use HostGator so I'm not exactly sure of the menus in GD, but the process is should be the same.

        1. You will need to add his domain as an addon domain to your hosting account. in GD= Hosted Domains -> Add domain - then add his url.
        2. On 1 & 1, he will need to add your nameservers to his account: DNS->Show DNS Settings - then Edit nameservers

You can find your nameservers in your hosting account. It looks something like ns2031.godaddy.com & ns2032.godaddy.com

Make sure both are added in 1&1 - also it can take up to 24 hours for the domain to link to your hosting, but typically in my experience only about 1 hour.

          Thank You Geoff!

Once I have add his add-on domain to my hosting then I assume I just install WP as I would on a sub or regular domain?

          Thanks Again... Very appreciated!

Correct. Once you can see his domain is pointing to your hosting, you can add WP as you normally would.

I think I am a bit late to help, but it may be useful to think about the two services as completely independent of each other.

Domain names are a product that must be pointed to nameservers or otherwise redirected in order to work.

Hosting is a product that must have a domains directed to it somehow in order to work.

Happy partnerships are made between the two when you can type in a domain and it directs you to a site.

It just doesn't matter who owns what or where they reside. It is the pointing that matters.

Glad you got it all sorted out.
