I have gotten myself a project. It's almost confirmed. Here's the situation:

My client have a website that showcase her singing tracks and videos. There are a combination of various audios and videos, with videos loading either from Youtube and own server.

Her website is running on Joomla, using Oculus theme from Rocket Theme website. She wants to be able to update her website by uploading her own videos/audios. She did the Joomla website by herself but she's not able to finish it because it's too complicated for her.

Now here's the problem:
- I've never used Joomla
- I've never done a website that has the potential to load many audios and videos.

I want to use WordPress as the solution but I don't know how to proceed in terms of the types of plugins.

I was also thinking of just using Joomla and try to fix her website. That could give me a chance to learn a new skill.

What do you think?

Joomla has quite a few audio/video components that will allow your client to upload audio and videos. Go to Joomla extensions, find the one that best suit her needs, upload it using the extension manager in the backend then configure.

        Hi Joseph,

I use Joomla since 2004 (at that time it was called mambot) and it is not so difficult to add the feature requested by your customer.

A month ago, I used this plugin and I believe it is presently the best option (free) for joomla 2.5 (supposing your customer website is under joomla 2.5 instead of joomla 3.0).

Be aware of the next migration that joomla 2.5 users will have to do shortly to joomla 3.0 [this why I start hating joomla (last mandatory migration from joomla 1.5 to joomla 2.5 was just a year ago)].

There are many topics on the Wordpress vs. Joomla. I would love for people to offer solutions the problems at hand instead of posting for the hell of it. Just saying something is better does not make it better. It's based on need.

I want to use WordPress as the solution but I don't know how to proceed in terms of the types of plugins.
How would he go about installing an audio/video upload feature in Wordpress or Joomla? If Wordpress, then what plugins would you recommend? Smh.

Joomla in my experience is a lot slower than WP but really depends what you're after.

WP is easier for newbies imo

I use Joomla. I'd recommend it in a heartbeat. Tons of people are biased to Wordpress, but Joomla's SEO is just as strong if configured correctly. There are tons of SEO components that are very strong. And as far as customizing it to meet your needs, there are tons of extentions that will allow you to hit the nail on the head for your client.

Joomla is one the best Content Management System, It is more user friendly and admin friendly. The admin can able to add content videos everything but the website should be build in proper way. Give to Good developer, they will do and give you the best website.

Do you even read the detail of OP? If you don't care to read in full detail of OP and just title, you could make yourselves a peace by keeping silent if you're that lazy.

OP! If you just don't know the way out of using Joomla now, JUST DON'T USE IT. That's won't do the trick and could let you/your reputation down because you don't know what you're doing.

The same rule apply to which one is better. Even if you know the way out of WordPress but this project, you still can't figure out how to do it again. Commercially, I just drop the project that I can't figure out how to do it initially.

Yet, I have some idea related to using WordPress. It could be achieve with some tweak with WordPress Post Formats.
Alternatively, for better management of post types, WordPress Custom Post Types would do the trick.

upgrading joomla is easy. I've gone from 1.7 to 2.5 now i'm at 3.1 No problems. It's the people who fail to read documentation who fail to migrate simply. But that's what akeeba backup is for. Super easy to take a backup and restore. I've worked with wordpress. and I'd build a site with Joomla any day over wordpress.

It is not just about "upgrading" like you say: it is most about the COST resulted due to new versions : most joomla 1.5 extensions/templates were not compatible with joomla 2.5 (or full of bugs).

Indeed, it's people who ignore these costs that thrufully fail to provide good quality services.

Having developed a number of Joomla and WP sites, I would suggest you consider 2 things here if you wish to help your client:

    1. WordPress has a better admin interface for the end user. It's dead easy to manage content and the modules are robust

    2. There is a bit of a learning curve to Joomla development, so if you have not done it before, make sure you build in enough time to get the hang of it.

Outside of that, you can use this module for handling media files both on the server and from external locations:

    AllVideos - Joomla! Extensions Directory

After using both Joomla and Wordpress to build websites, without a doubt I can't go past Wordpress. It comes down to personal preferences, but I just think Wordpress is more flexible with options when it comes to using a theme with different types plugins as well as enhancing security/performance. Its also well documented that Wordpress offers better back-end security and based on my experience I think just has less bugs or conflicting problems integrating 3rd party products than Joomla (although I admit WP still has its share).

I don't consider them to be THE rivals, maybe not even rivals at all. Drupal is much bigger than Joomla, at least from my perspective. WordPress is starting to be a household name, but even WordPress is just a small PHP CMS.

I personally can't stand Joomla, but you can definitely build sites with it.

I guess that depends on your definition of "small" and "blog". Blog is just another term for a news listing so any decent CMS can do that. WordPress can handle large number of articles and pages without breaking a sweat - but so does almost any other decent CMS. Most sites newer get to the point where the number of entries is a major problem.

WordPress' the admin interface is not ideal for managing hundreds of pages, but there's a plugin for that too. If you want robust taxonomy support Drupal might be a better bet.

Joomla has a very steep learning curve. If you don't know it, don't try it on a client. I gave up using Joomla, after spending over a month on learning how to create beautiful sites with it because if I flipped them on Flippa, the customer support was horrendous. Most people don't have a clue how to operate it.

I prefer WordPress and find it easier to use. Clients seam to enjoy working in WordPress more. The interface is pretty slick, straight forward and with the new 3.8 update it got better.

For plugins, there are tons available in WordPress and usually if you search on a broad topic (i.e. "Security", "SEO", etc.) many free ones can be found to select from. Great community.

Hope this helps, all the best to you.

As I said I just can't stand Joomla, but I find Coffeeguy's statement to be true.

Joomla is generally reasonably straightforward to use. The unnecessary UI stuff is hidden in 3.x, the control panel screen is actually useful, and the system is pleasant to look at.

Themes on WordPress are actually pretty hard to learn properly, and the theme system is a great foundation to build redundant and convoluted stuff. I've got no idea how Joomla 3.x actually handles this, but it can't be much worse.
