How To Sell Responsive Website Design Services to Existing Clients?

Hey guys, I designed a few websites for clients over the years and they're pretty outdated. As web designers we all know that the advantage of having a responsive website is that it is mobile optimized and compatible with all devices to name a few.

If you have been providing web design services for clients over the years, chances are you have designed standard (older) websites for clients that are pretty much outdated in today's world. So my question is, how do you offer your existing clients a new responsive website or is it really that necessary for them to change the look and feel of their existing site even if it is 5-10 years old? Also would you charge your clients extra to build a responsive website?

Unless the website designs used were way ahead of the curve they probably look pretty outdated don't they? Why not go for the whole redesign and use responsiveness as a selling point?

Hi mate.Maybe you can tell your clients that nowadays responsive design is necessary.Since the mobile technology growing up faster that change how people browsing not only on desktop / laptop. And because mobile device have smaller screen size and smaller resources , then responsive will solve it and make the site more accessible in many device.Hope you get my point

well i've made it a habit to build a strong relationship with any client that i have worked with directly.

since html5 and css3 .. the beginning of the responsive era.. and web 2.0 design i've approached my previous clients..

i did the smart thing and showed them their competitors in their niche .. that had opted into 2.0 designs.. hunted around and someohow got their traffic stats since they made their changes..

    their recent reviews..

and the idea to redo the webistes just kind of sold itself

don't go to your old clients in order to make a few bucks and say i'll redo your website and it will cost you this much

best way is to show them what they are missing out on and have the idea sell itself.

just have your clients look at their analytics.. their own analytics... for mobile and tablet visits.. and the time spent on webiste.. they will see how much business they are losing out on..

if the competitor thing doesn't really hit them where it matters their own analytics are a sure-fire way to convince them

also it's a good thing to go prepared when you go into the meeting room with some really stunning visual ideas of what you plan to make for them.. if they can see what their platform will look like after they decide to opt for the redesign you will have sold your concept effectively in a single meeting

grab the check and start development.

I agree with thecontentvendor on showing them visually what they are missing out on when it comes to responsive design, a lot of my clients just don't get it when you start talking about 'responsive layouts' - its all too technical and goes straight over their heads, but if you start showing 'before and after' polished mock-ups it all becomes a lot clearer. Use great looking mockups that shows how it looks across multiple devices - go to themeforest and under 'product mockups' you will find an awesome selection of pre-built photoshop templates that you can buy for 10 to 15 bucks and drop in screenshots into layers that automatically fit into the screen perspective. Your clients will be blown away.

Another good pitch is to start talking about how Google likes to see that display correctly across all devices (not just PCs) and will in many cases with give a ranking edge over its competitors (again break this down into something the client understands i.e. equates to more opportunities to get more traffic).
