For different website and designs different background colors would look better. I don't think anyone can recommend on anything unless we see your website

I find that a simple grey works well, as depending on monitor settings white can be quite blindingly bright.

It enables your design to standout, and visitors won't be distracted by the background.

I have used #E0E0E0 as the background colour to my website, which I will be launching early next year.

If not grey, try muted shades of green / blue / red etc.

I would say WHITE is the best but it's not so much that it's white but rather because it's CLEAN EMPTY SPACE. And so the color white gives off that effect the easiest with the least effort and works well with high-content sites.

Usually it depends on the theme of the website.

But most websites have a white or light grey background.
