Hey guys,

When you hire a web developer and I need to give him access to building the WordPress site. When I make a new user name what role should I give him?
'adminsitrator' ???

Also, what email address do you put. Do you put their email?

Thank you

You have to give them administrator access to the wordpress site, also they probably need FTP access to that domain.

You might just as well use their email address to keep it simple, if there is a problem with the user/password combination they can resolve it without additional contact.

I would suggest you save a full backup of the files and mySQL database before you give them access, just in case. I use XCloner plugin to do that.

As said above you would yes, they normally need administrator to test the site and for the email make sure you do as if they forget there pass it will be harder for them to get a new one.

Once again thank you so much for your help.

How come on oDesk, and you hire designers for a new WordPress website job, install my theme and make it custom to my website. They want ftp access?
Is that ok to give them ftp access on host gator? After they are done, just change the password right?

Its interesting I have put up other wordpress sites, I just do it all on wordpress.

      Thank you

Thank you so much for the tip. I really appreciate it.
So the agency on odesk..after I hired them he said this:
"I am working on my demo server"
"the wordpress theme configure on my demo server. You can see here____"

What does this mean? I thought usually when you hire someone, you just give them the wp login and ftp and tell them what you want and get the website up.
I have not experienced this before....should I find another wp developer?

      Thanks again

As long as the developer you hired is meeting any established deadlines let him develop it their way. They can do their work on their server as long as they install it, working on yours, when they are done.

That mean they work - install, customization or any task you ask him to do - on their own hosting. Depends on the terms you both agreed, they will move it to your hosting once the task completed and reviewed by you.

It's common for us developer to do that, first because we (I do) feel more comfortable working on our own environment, second.. to protect the codes in case anything go south (eg. in my case the client took off with the code and dispute the escrow).

Don't sweat it as I do all my work offline on my server too, this way there is no effect to a live site. When done, tested and approved its a real easy move back to the customer site.
