Hey everyone,

I've seen a lot of questions around the forum about using Wordpress for internet marketing, so I've decided to put together a series of free training videos showing everyone the nitty gritty of what to do and how to do it.

I'm running a poll in the main internet marketing area, so I can get a better idea of what people want to know the most.

If there's anything you want to know about, please feel free to jump in on this thread and let me know.

Thanks!

    I can't think of anyone more capable of giving me the right answers so here goes:
    #1, how to set a different background color for each post.
    #2, how to make a new page post show up in proper sequence with the new posts inside the "recent posts" section.

    Awesome, thanks Talewins. I'm going to try and cover every request I get.

    So, with a different color background for each post, would you be thinking along the lines of:
    A) Set up a new background color when you create the post, or
    B) Have a theme that will automatically give the 1st post one color, 2nd post another and so on, with these colors being setup when you activate the theme.

    Re the proper sequence for posts, were you wanting to know how to create an area that shows your latest x number of posts, with the rest of the layout dedicated to other content? The reason I ask is that as a default Wordpress will show you most recent posts at the top, so can you tell me a little more about what kind of result you have in mind?

    Thanks, keepem coming!

    I'm sorry for the delayed response. I expected this to appear in my control panel. And if this hits twice I am really sorry.

    background Color... I'd like to know how to apply automatically, alternating for each post.

    I must need to explain the second request better... using the widgit for RECENT POSTS the only items that show up are POSTS..
    * Glasgow Go
    * recession's cure
    * Confusion Unfused
    * Healthy Water
    * 2 Points 4 The Red Man

    If I set up another PAGE -- not a post, a page where posts are made -- then it does not show up in the RECENT POSTS section. I would like for new pages to show up on the main page so visitors will be made aware of the new activity.

    I find it incredible that no one else is taking advantage of your expertise. Your former Warrior posts in this section were all helpful and authoritative.

      No need to apologise Talewins! Thanks for the feedback.

      This is actually a little tricky, as it would require some modification of the actual theme, and a little coding. This might be something to fall into the 'advanced' category a little down the track.

      I had a quick look around and found a plugin that allows you to do this. Recent Pages and Posts Plugin | Narfstuff

      It looks as though you have to edit your theme to use this, so that's a good topic for a video. Thanks!

      Aw shucks, thanks I'm sure once I start releasing the videos we'll build up some steam.

      Also, a warrior asked me today if I could notify him when I start to release these videos, so I've set up a mailing list for anyone that wants me to update them. Don't stress, video updates only, I promise

    I'd like to know:

    1) How to create a theme.

    2) How to get round this problem - on some themes you have the sidebar set up with features like the blog roll already in. Then when you add a new widget (first widget) all the previous sidebar disappears.

    3) How to alter the width of the blog post/sidebar and whole blog if necessary.

    I guess all these require coding.

    Hi Steve,

    Thanks for your input.

    You're right that those topics would require coding. To create a theme from scratch you need to know html, css, and be able to design graphics. Even to change up the width of the sidebar, content area and overall blog is really the same thing - you need html and css. It's probably a little beyond the scope of these videos to teach complete coding and design skills. But, one thing I might do at some point is show people how to take a regular html sales page, and easily (relatively) convert it to work with Wordpress.

    On the question of things disappearing from your sidebar when you add a new widget, there's no way around that I'm afraid. Basically, what you have is a piece of code in every blog theme that asks, "Is there a widget here or not?" If there's no widget, the blog gets told to display a certain set of information. If there is, it just shows the widgets you have active. The best thing to do is just take note of what was there in the beginning, and just add those same widgets to the sidebar again.

    Thanks for sharing your requests. Sorry if what you're after is a little beyond what I can cover here. But, a great place to get some tips on html and css is W3Schools Online Web Tutorials. I've learned a tonne from that site.

    Not sure if this is directly in your target line, but I had a question about Wordpress MU. I am looking into having a niche site where users can register and have their own blog or page. I know that I specifically want to use Wordpress MU and MU only for this.

    What do I need exactly to get it going? VPS? Dedicated server? What type of host. Any special features I should look for in a host when setting up an MU-based community?

    Any plugins or companion tools that make MU more efficient ro valuable?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Powertreb,

    I must confess I've only played with Wordpress MU a couple of times, and it was a couple of years ago. I found that it can be a little tricky to setup, especially if you want to provide subscribers with their own subdomains, but once you get going its solid as a rock.

    I would think you wouldn't need a dedicated server straight off the bat, and its unlikely you're revenue would cover the costs of a dedicated server initially. I would instead look for a reputable host that offers you the ability to upgrade as you go, and who can shift you from shared hosting, to VPS, to dedicated hosting as you need it, but without changing your nameservers at any point.

    Hostgator would be the first people to query in this regard, I would suggest. Their shared hosting is the most inexpensive high performance hosting I've experienced, and they do have dedicated hosting available. I don't know if they would be able to keep your nameservers the same as you scaled up - you'd have to check with them on that.

    As far as plugins or companion tools, I probably can't recommend anything specific. I know that there is a dedicated list of WPMU compatible plugins out there, which is.... here: WordPress MU plugins to extend and improve your site WPMU DEV - WordPress MU plugins, themes and more

    I hope that helps, and good luck with your project!

    Hi fahen,

    By "sharing with other" do you mean allowing other people to access a blog and write posts for it?

    If not, what kind of sharing were you thinking of?

      Hello friends,I am a newbie around here.I will be glad if some one could help me out.I have a blog with about 20 posts.I have noticed in other blogs their previous posts appear as back links.Even in case of new blogs with fewer posts all posts appear as backlink.But in my blog the 20 odd posts don't appear as back link.Is there a wordpress plugin for that?I had all in one SEO plugin.I thought may be something is wrong with that and have deactivated it.What do I do now?

    Hiya Marigold,

    Would you be able to post a link to one of the sites with the kind of links you are referring to? I know you can't post links in their normal format yet, so you can just replace the dots in the address with the actual word "dot", eg, www dot thesiteaddress dot com.

    I'm thinking perhaps what you are seeing is the result of a related posts plugin. If you can show me an example, I can confirm this for you.

    Cheers,

    - Kezz

      I have been trying to understand how to modify a wordpress theme to look like more like a static page than a blog.

      Thanks!
