Ive got a page with tons of pdf reports download links on it. Id like to be able to limit the amount of times visitors can download these files per day.

Does anyone know if there is a plugin for something like this? I don't want to have to change the layout so the usual wordpress download managers are out... just want some sort of popup to display or something whenever they go over a predetermined amount of downloads.

    Hi There,

I don't know if there is any plugin out there, but I think you should speak to your web hosting company and see if they can implement Quality of service (QoS) / Traffic policing. Probably they won't do it if you're not paying for premium service and it depends on the type of hosting you have. Implementing traffic shaping can restrict the amount of times visitors can download these files per day.

Depends if you want to limit the downloads in general or to specific members.

If you want to limit the downloads in general i.e. site wide then I guess you can talk to you hosting company about achieving that. But if you're looking to limit the downloads to the specific members of your site, you will probably be able to find a Wordpress plugin for that. You will probably be able to find a plugin that allows you control number of downloads in general.

However, I personally cannot recommend any as I never really needed this kind of feature. I'm sure you will find something if you Google it out. When you do, please let me know, as this is interesting to me.

    Thanks

Hmm... Did you think it through? Asking for a plugin and adding that the plugins that do what you are asking for - are out.

And, btw, why would a plugin with certain functionality change your layout? If such plugin exists, either the plugin author is an idiot or it's not a plugin

The other option is you have no idea what a plugin is.

I'm fully aware of what a plugin is... you're simply not comprehending the question. Never mind.

You can use a plugin to lock these downloads in a "members" area where people have a login. And from there, you put a limited number of downloads allowed on all the links.

Try this out with this File Manager plugin just like that "plugin in: File Manager". The most amazing advantage of using it is that it can be used on wordpress without any cost.

Try WP-Filebase, it has the download limit feature you need, and a highly customizable templating system to match your site design.

Sounds like you want something to track the number of downloads per IP address.

If you have a developer you work with they could probably put together a PHP script for you to track downloads by IP and then show a call to action pop-up/overlay after X downloads.

If it's a bandwidth issue you could look at using a 3rd party to host the files like dropbox so they are downloading them from there . . . or maybe prompt them sign up for your email list to receive a zip file or link to a zip file of all the pdf files.
