What is the difference between Linux vs Windows Hosting???

I'm looking for a good web hosting service to support 2 sites initially and eventually 4-5. Any suggestions?

Just a btw, but the operating system you use like windows, mac or linux has nothing to do with your hosting. Any computer system can handle text and html, and that is all you need for a site. In fact for me right now there is zero incentive to buy windows 7 (when it comes out) or the latest mac offering.

A host I am pretty happy with is hostpc.com. Their basic plan is $27 a year for unlimited domains. This is about a quarter the cost of Hostgator. I do have an affiliate link in my sig site footer if you are feeling enthusiastic but they pay so little in affiliate commissions that it is hardly worth putting it up here.

That's actually a positive point for me. HG has quite a huge affiliate commission payout and you wind up paying for that when you sign up with them.

If you do want to do some detailed research for hosting the best place is the Webhostingtalk forum, at Web Hosting Forum | Discussions on Hosting Services & Companies

If you have any specific concerns about hosting (mine was traffic spike policy) you can find a lot of detail there. If you get your hosting choices narrowed down to 2 you can do a search for threads that mention them both and sometimes get direct comparisons between the 2 of one feature or another.

    Happy hosting hunting,

People generally use Windows hosting if they will use ASP or ASP.NET for their website platform, while Linux is used for PHP, among others.

Windows hosting is also generally much expensive than Linux hosting.

I have one of each, 2 virtual dedicated, one in windows server 2003 and the other in centos5. The problem with windows is mod_rewrite is not easily set up and no htaccess support. I keep static and asp sites on my windows server and wordpress/phpbb3/joomla sites on my centos server.

    Hope that helps some

If you are just setting up a basic site with some products and maybe RAPs or Delavo, I would recommend getting Linux.

I usually go with Linux hosting. I used to work at Godaddy and I would suggest Linux shared hosting to all my customers. One, theres a bunch of open source and free applications that run on Linux and depending on your hosting company they have installation scripts for them (OScommerce, zen cart, Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal, etc)

The simple answer (or question) is, What are you trying to accomplish with your website? Like what applications do you plan to run? What Content management system if any? Which programming languages will your site use? Stuff like that.

And some hosting companies (godaddy, at least) charge the same for both operating systems.
