Converting old html site to wordpress...seo issue?

Hi Gang

Wasn't sure whether this should be for the SEO forum or Wordpress. Anyway, I have an old site which I created in dreamweaver, and now I'm start from scratch with a wordpress site. Ideally, I want to keep the inner page urls the same in the wordpress version, but it means that I will have to name them without the hyphens. For example, where as wordpress would create something like theis mysite/best-bikes-in-britain , I will have to have it like this mysite/bestbikesinbritain ...so my questions it, is t better from an seo point of view to have the words seperated with hyphens, or doesn't it really make much difference???

Cheers
Phil

What really makes the difference is that you do proper 301 redirects from your old URLs to the new ones.

Crikey, what are they? So, do you mean instead of deleting my old pages, I should change them to re-directing to the new urls? Or do I only have to do that if I'm wanting to use different urls for my new pages?

      Cheers

Also, don't forget that when writing/editing a post you can edit the "slug" as well...
In WP terminology the 'permalink' (right under the title whem editing) is called slug - the part of the URL that is created from your post title by WP.

Which means, if you want and have the time to do it - you can have permalinks without hyphens.

Thanks Istvan - So you think then that is doesn't really matter from an SEO point of view of all the words are together without hyphens?

      Thanks

That can be done with plugin(s) or a simple .htaccess file where the rules say something like 'if visitor comes to see oldpage abcxyz > redirect to newpage a-b-c-x-y-z'

And no, you do NOT have to keep the old one for a redirect

Honestly, I don't really care about that kind of seo things...
If using 301 (in server langauge that is PERMANENT) redirects I wouldn't bother to change all the slags manually, so I'd leave them as WP creates those.
