Wordpress: do you lose SEO benefit if using a gallery plugin?

Hi Guys

I'm using a gallery plugin in wordpress, which saves hours of work. However, while it gives you the chance to label each picture, I'm wondering whether the pictures will not get picked up in the search engines as the images are pulled through rather than actually being embedded on the page...if that makes sense.

WHile the gallery plugin saves me time, I'd imagine I will lose a lot of traffic if google isn't picking up the name of the pictures.

Any ideas?

Cheers
Phil

I can't speak to every plugin, but most I've used personally in Wordpress, even if pulled through server side by a plugin, are still embedded into the html for the browser to see. If you can view-source and see the images, along with there appropriate alt tags/title tags etc as you have set them, there should be no reason Google does not pick them up just the same.

      Thanks Jesse

I'll have a look at the code and see if the tags show up, if they do then your theory is probably correct.

    Hey Phil,

If the gallery is using a Custom Post Type, you should be able to block the links to the individual posts that get created in your XML sitemap using Yoast's SEO Plugin. If the plugin generates additional pages, but doesn't use custom post types, you might have to edit the plugin code for SEO puposes. I ran into this once where the gallery had pagination (1,2,3...8,9) and did not have the <title> tags or <meta> tags set in a helpful way.

Take a look and let us know what you find.
