Desktop publishing to website??

I just had my site hacked. For whatever reason, they decided to delete some posts and pages, presumably with the malware file I found. They also added some posts with links. So I believe the overall purpose was web spam.

My host is restoring the site, hopefully right now.

That is what made me wonder about the following (if those assumptions are even correct).

If I used Blogdesk for publishing to my blog I would have a copy of all my webpages on my PC. (right now I write posts in Wordprsess using Yoast to help with the on-page SEO). Using a desktop publisher would also make my life easier if it had all the things it needed. For instance, Blogdesk doesn't have the ability to insert <h2>, <h3> tags.

What desktop publisher would be able to do all of this? Can I use MS Word, or is there something lost when saving a page in Word as html?

On my site I used Wordfence to delete the malware, I found the posts easily and deleted them, but getting the restore done is on its 2nd day with Arvixe.

What can I do to give myself better protection and not be at the mercy of my hosting provider?

Sorry about the rambling and thanks for considering my problem.

    Hey schleprock,

Sorry to hear your wordpress site was exploited, it happens.

As for your question, Going with a desktop publisher really won't give you an added layer of security, it will give you more ease of access, but then again, you can just simply open a browser tab and login to your site and create a post. Your desktop can also be infected with malicious file and still do damage, so a desktop publisher won't add much added security, but that won't stop attacks from happening to your blog either or.

As far as security, you should look into plugins that log intrusion attempts such as login lockdown, captchas for comments, or moderation for everything.

A great tool i stumbled upon before is Wordpress Backup for Dropbox which is great for backing up your site automatically to your dropbox account. If this should happen again, you would have your own copy of your website of the last successful backup, which you can then easily dump to your site again or consider a new host to move it to.

Either or these are just precautions, wordpress will always have updates and you should update it when a stable version is released. As long as you have a backup plugin for wordpress or even use cPanels backup feature, you won't have to be at the mercy of your hosting provider.

    Hope this helps.

    I found it here:
WordPress › WordPress Backup to Dropbox « WordPress Plugins

Do you know if Wordpress Backup allow you to move to different hosting providers too. I am happy where I am at, but that may not always be the case. The documentation doesn't talk about migrating sites.
Or is that no longer a big deal. Would I just get a new host, install wordpress, upload the plugin, and then restore.
Maybe the only guys who cared about that were people with a lot of blogs. I only have one.

    Thanks

Wordpress backup to dropbox is solely for backing up. Backing up is the easy part, restoring it can be a bit different unless the host uses cPanel or Plesk, then its easy dumping the database and restoring files via FTP. If you ever need help, just PM me, I wouldn't mind giving you a few pointers, once you get the hang of it you can migrate sites in less than 5 minutes depending on bandwidth speed.

To protect your site from hackers, your best bet would be to install Wordfence plugin. It can block most of the common hacking methods, and also scan your site for changes.

For backup and migrating sites, I use Xcloner.

Both of them are free and available on WordPress.org

I love backupbuddy - emails a backup to dropbox, or I just download the backup to my computer. Doesnt help you now but in future its definately something I'd recommend. Every year I also switch hosts to take advantage of new customer pricing (and also to get a fresh google advertising voucher ha ha) and its great for switching your site to another server.
