Hey warriors,

I'm planning to start my own web designing services and I'm confused of which server to buy. I'm going to do hosting services for the clients too. Please suggest me a good server where i can also host my clients websites and files.

Thanks

There are many companies that provide you best services in hosting. I personally use godaddy.com which is I think is the best of all. There are some other suggestions for you
1: Web Hosting Search Tool, Reviews & More at WhoIsHostingThis.com
2: Web Hosting & Domain Names by FatCow.com
3: 1and1.com - Professional solutions for Website, Domain, Hosting

      Hello sham,

thanks. i was expecting some more in-detail about choosing servers.

      For example:
Should i go for "http://www.hostgator.com/shared" business plan as shown in that link ?
      or
Should i go for "http://www.hostgator.com/dedicated" dedicated server ?

Because i'm going to offer my clients for new web design along with maintenance and hosting services. Hosting makes me to host their domain along with the files in my own server.

I hope you understand my situation now.

      Looking forward for your thoughts.

I would go with LiquidWeb I've been using them awhile and while it doesn't have as much promotional fluff as comes with the big boys like GoDaddy and Hostgator, they have a much better reputation for reliability and there servers are much faster due to the fact they don't stuff 1000's of unlimited bandwidth accounts on a server. It will cost you more but you and your clients will get more out of it in the end.

You're mentioning dedicated server - why don't you start with VPS if you already know how to setup server!?

Even if you don't, there's bunch of great tuts on library.linode.com, and digitalocean. I use them both, ($20 and $5 per month, unmanaged), and I think it's a good solution. For $5 on digitalocean you'll get 512mb ram, or for $10 you'll get 1gb if I recall correctly.

Better than shared hosting anyway, even price can be lower than shared, and you can charge for it, plus you choose your software! I would suggest you to go with one of those two, both are pretty solid, as I said plenty of resources to learn from.

      Thank you explaining guys.

After putting a lot of thinking i have came to a concluding point. I'm going for a reseller hosting from Hostgator.

I'm going to target on small business clients and start-up companies. I'm quiet confused of which size to start with the reseller hosting.

      for example:

"http://www.hostgator.com/resellers" which one will be the best for me ?

      Any suggestions ?

If you go for Hostgator, or any other EIG owned hosting company, ensure that you back up frequently, very frequently.

EIG take over previously respected hosts and then move all the clients / servers to their datacentre. From there you can expect frequent downtime and unhelpful support.

I never liked Hostgator, but after EIG got their claws into them its even worse!

If you have the chance, get a VPS, install cPanel and go for it - a little more of a learning curve to manage everything but a lot better in my opinion, compared to reseller accounts.

Start small. Smallest plan. It's probably easy to upgrade if you need it.
Especially if you're targeting start-ups - they won't have big requirements, bandwidth consumption or big storage. Good luck

A reseller plan is good to start out with. Do some more research over on webhostingtalk.com forum

I would use a reseller account at minimum.

    Don't use
    - Godaddy
    - Yahoo
    - 1&1
    - Dreamhost
    - the 50+ EIG brands, including Hostgator, Bluehost, Justhost, iPage, Fatcow, etc

Look at Veerotech for reseller hosting, an excellent host that's also a member here.

Don't use Hostgator or any of the EIG owned hosts. They are only concerned with getting as many customers as they can, and they don't follow up with providing good service.
See the list of hosts to avoid as posted above

I wouldn't use Godaddy for registering domains (or hosting). I have been using Name.com for over 10 years and am very happy with them, many people here will recommend namecheap, but I was not happy with them and name.com is cheaper by a few $$ a year for each domain.

if you are just starting, I would suggest to go with a reseller hosting plan with your own white label name servers or a virtual private server will do for you. Do not buy a dedicated server unless you have large traffic or large of number of websites. This will save your money, also you will be able to get free technical/hosting support for your clients. Good Luck!

Sometimes people thinking hosting their client's websites is great, sometimes this leads to bigger headaches. I rather use a host's referral program and recommend to them that host. I will even go as far help them with the account setup.

That way the support issue is in the host's hand and you can still make residual income without the headaches.

Webhostingtalk.com is the best place to research. When we started out, we used Turnkey Internet simply because they had a Black Friday Sale, thus having best rates. You can still research for more. As far as what plan you should go for, start with the smallest reseller hosting plan, you can upgrade anytime.

A copy of my Off-Topic forum post...

      Mctavish,

I'm not 100% sure on what what you are trying to accomplish so my advice may not be the best fit for you. There are a lot of smart guys and girls in the Offline Marketing Discussions forum and the Website Design forum. You may want to ask some questions over there.

Here are the assumptions I am going with in your case:

      • You want to build websites for clients.
      • You want to make ongoing income from the monthly hosting.
      • You may not have a bunch of money to start with. This thinking come from my own experience and may be incorrect.
You can start and build your own site(s) with the Baby Plan (the Baby Plan is not a reseller plan) for about $8.00 per month. This will allow you to build your main website, build any test websites and build portfolio websites at a very reasonable cost.

When you get your first paying client, you can upgrade to the Aluminum Reseller plan and it only takes a few minutes.

      http://secure.hostgator.com/acforwar...esellers.shtml

Note: Do not put any client websites on a non-reseller account! You will regret it later.

Also, Hostgator is not the only hosting company but they have been good to me.

      Hope this helps.
