Thanks for all the great info I've gotten from this forum! I have a question.

I bought a domain at dreamhost last week and I created a website using yola.com that I like. I've decided I'd like yola.com to host my site. My deal with dreamhost is free domain registration and 9.95 hosting for a whole year. How does the registration of my domain change if I choose to switch to yola hosting? Is my domain still registered for 1 year? If so, do I re-register the domain after 1 year? Do I have to re-register the domain with yola, since they're hosting my site? Or can I re-register the domain anywhere? What's the process of re-registering so I don't lose the domain name? Thanks in advance.

    Hello,

You domain is registered to you no matter where it's hosted. You will need to renew this after your year is up, what service you use to do this is up to you, but the domain is probably locked to the company that registered it for you (to stop people taking your domain off you). So, you can leave the domain registration where it is, and still have it hosted else where. basically all you need to do it change the name resolution to be the hosting companies. Typically there will be two (normally called NS1 and NS2.hostingcompany.com). If you have your own server, you'll have already set-up the names services, so you'd use ns1.yournameservice.com.

    That's it really.

    Cheers, Lee.

jessewrites: your domain registration and your hosting are separate and different things. You can buy a domain registration from one company and have your hosting on a completely different company. You will likely need to pay yearly for the domain registration to the domain company and monthly for the hosting to the hosting company.

So, you don't actually need to transfer your domain. You can easily keep it on Dreamhost and host the actual website files on Yola. All you need to do is set what's called the "DNS setup" to point at your Yola hosting. You should be able to ask for guidance on this to your Dreamhost support team. Once the DNS is set up you can pretty much forget about it and just manage your website on Yola.

Alternatively if you feel you must have your domain registered on Yola you can transfer the whole domain over there, but that's a bit of a more complicated process.

And I'll also throw in that I don't recommend letting the company who registers your domains host your files as well. I've had to deal with one too many nightmares that resulted.
