I am confused about Codeacademy, but I would recommend W3Schools Online Web Tutorials for basic learning. And for advanced questions I would recommend Github/stack over flow. And all these are free solution.

Agreed with you buddy. W3Schools is more better place to learn web-designing.

I went through the tutorials for HTML and CSS and afterward I felt like I didn't learn them well. I went on to use Lynda.com (which cost money unfortunately) and now I feel like I have a good grasp of them.

Codeacademy is "lighter", but that's fine if you're new. Go through it, use also w3schools.com. I would agree with NateJasper that Lynda video tuts are good, but take your time. Learn from all sources that you feel are good.

I would stay away from codecademy for front-end. It's more bare-bones in general and that's not a good thing when you're trying to learn about design (which is visually based).

You might want to look into Team Treehouse. They have videos (you'd have to like that style), which are more visual in nature, and that's something that would be beneficial for front-end/design

EDIT: Saw you want to learn javascript. That's a bit of a rabbit hole. I've found Code Avengers to be the best for javascript (they also have HTML/CSS if you want to give that a shot too).

I really wouldn't recommend W3Schools. Alot of the content is outdated and some of it's wrong.

Codeacademy is good though, as is TeamTreehouse

I am in the same boat learning some of the same things. Can you get some snippets or links to the specific areas you say are outdated and wrong?

      I'd like to know.

      Thanks,

It can't be so outdated, for all the basic things about HTML and CSS there's good info with practical examples and it does the job. I don't know what you saw, I'm not saying you're wrong, but I think he still can have a lot of benefit from w3schools.

It's not that it's outdated in the sense that it doesn't work; however, it's mostly missing current best practices. The other sites compete against each other (as opposed to just existing as a resource) and that's why they always have to stay on top of the game.

For coding, where there is always more than a few ways to solve a problem, this is important.

codecademy is ok, Lynda video tutorials are good, but you need to do them yourself to get a good grasp on the codes. still i would recommend w3schools. it got much content and knowledge to share. not only how to do it, but also whats the pros and crons of using the method.
