Hi There
I was wondering if there is a set format for a letter that authorises me to ask another website provider to pass over the files of a website. My client is not happy with them and as waited for his twelve month contract to finish. My client owns the name also.

I am not totally understanding this question, why would a website hand over their files?

If he signed up with a hosting company and took advantage of a free registration, the first thing they need to do is change registrars for the domain.

Then it's just a simple matter of getting a new host and transferring the files via ftp (or wget) to the new host. If there are MYSQL databases those need to be transferred as well.

A program like Xcloner might be able to do most of the work.

If this is your client and they are asking you to move from one provider to another and you are unable to complete the task then you might want to outsource as this is not a hard task to do. Mike

Sorry don't think I explained this right. I sell mobiles web sites. A client as bought a site from me, he now wants it to go on his domain as sub domain m.his site. His normal website is hosted by another company which he has been with over twelve months and is now out of contract. He paid for the website design and he owns the name. He now wants me to host his site on my server and take over the running of his site. The question I am asking is Do I just write to this other company and request that they send me over the files so I and put them on my sever along with the sub domain (m.) or is there a set form I need to fill out.
      This is a great forum

If the both hosting accounts (new and old) use cPanel you can request the new host move everything over to the new hosting space from the old host. They'll need the cPanel logins but should do it for free (mine does).

If the old hosting is out of contract he probably have to pay in order to get his files unless he has all the old backups. I would suggest that you have him contact the old host and see how he can get his files including databases downloaded so you can move them to the new hosting account. If he doesn't want to do that then he has to provide you with the welcome mail as call in as him.

Ask him for the files and upload them to your server. Or at least put him to ask his old provider for the files and find a way to get them and then move everything to your server.

Does he still have access to the server? If so, then you can obtain a copy of the site directly by downloading the files via FTP and accessing the control panel to download any databases that are associated with the site.

The first thing you need to find out is what "owns the domain" means in exact terms. If he got the domain name "for free" along with the contract that is now expired, he may not still own it.

Just give them shell/ftp access to your new host. They should be able to download any files and copy over any databases. Then change the DNS to resolve to theirs.
That's what it sounds like anyway
