In all honesty, a website that has a lot less clutter can be eye catching straight off the bat since so many websites are packed with widgets, ads and other crap. A clean design with good branding colors and a interesting logo are a lot harder to come by. Getting that effect is harder (I'm trying to plan out a better design for my site, I think it's a little dull at the moment.

Of course if the design delivers the content well, and there's an awesome headline and terrific content, that in itself can lift the perception of a design and give it substance.

Overall, simplicity is the most powerful thing in my opinion

I agree with Wade, simplicity wins for me. You give people too many options and people will get confused and leave.

I've been embracing minimalist designs lately and have been getting a lot of good feedback. Easy to read, simple navigation, limited palette of colors, and maybe 2 different fonts with different degrees of weight for consistency/contrast. Fair use of images/video and icons!

Have been using icons frequently too to help convey concepts and keep the amount of text down.

I also don't use ads on any of my sites, I understand that some people make their revenue from Adsense, but try to keep the ads off if it's not necessary. Really annoys me when I go to corporate websites that are full of ads! I understand blogs or news article sites, but corporate sites? ruins the user experience IMO.

I too think that simple under-stated designs are more eye-catching - where the focus is on the content not on the imagery -

Simplicity in design is like beauty - hard to define and to achieve, but easy to recognize.

It takes hard work to build an easy website.

When in doubt, you can always try to be inspired by Apple's iOS latest trends
They seem to really influence the UI and web design world.

Good point gferrand. I often think of Apple and other top advertisers (e.g. slick magazine ads) as good Visual Communication examples.

There has been a lot of scientific market research done about online Visual Communication. This research supports the concepts of clean design, as described above.

And it makes for "rules-of-thumb" or "best practices"; for example, you should (almost) never use a colored font on a colored background - not enough contrast for easy reading. And this research results in other such good "rules".

I wrote "almost" because, for example, an extremely light Yellow on a very dark Violet are almost as readable as black on white. Also, on displays which are light sources, pure black on full white can have too much contrast, so websites often use a dark grey, rather than full black for their text.

Check out Marketing Experiments for excellent marketing scientific research, videos and webinars (I'm not an affiliate, just a big fan).

    Hope this helps....

A lot of people will tell you it's all about the graphics. Haha. I think people put huge prejudice towards the graphics even more so than any other factor on a website other than maybe mobile-friendliness
