Thanks for adding more confusion to a topic that is already slightly confusing to me! LOL JK.

I know I am probably missing out on what custom fields can do, just haven't wrapped my head around the concept yet. I have used some theme's that use them for adding images.

I would be curious how others use them to their advantage?

Here are a couple ways I have used them. 1) Promo site for a magazine. The custom field shows the page number and volume of the magazine that the image is taken from
2)Custom field added to user profile to store scores from online tests
3)Directory sites -store info for the listings like telephone numbers (probably be built in if using a directory theme- but I find those do not all work properly. Doing this makes it easier to set up better searching.

That makes sense. Curious though, what's the difference between using a custom field vs adding the content to the post?

          Hey Ron,

I've used them to insert info into posts. For example this site uses them to create posts around gym activities.

The client enters info into to the post regarding prices etc and all the formatting etc is taken care of. Here's an example post:

Movers & Shakers - Tone Leisure

Everything on that page is added with a custom field.

Very interesting use of custom fields. Thanks Alex.

Placing info in custom fields can make it easier to search, to grab data from the field (so your software can do something else with it), perhaps to rewrite the data: e.g. the name of a city changes so you want to change it in all the mailing addresses but not in the blog references to it (seeing as most people won't recognize the new name yet). It would be easy to change the occurence in all the custom fields (if you are good with myPhpAdmin).

You can use custom fields to add informations about your posts, products or anything else you have on your site. Also you can create a custom search and many other things if you know how to use them.
I don't really see the point of this topic but anyway, if I use a plugin for custom fields then I prefer Advanced Custom Fields.
