How to speed up a Wordpress Blog?

Hello to all.

I have a Wordpress blog, and when I type in the url, it seems that it takes FOREVER to load. I am planning on sending a rush of traffic to it and I'm concerned that the load time will be too long for visitors. I was told to get a caching program, so I installed something called DB Cache Reloaded Fix, and according to the instructions, It is working fine, but my page still seems like it takes forever to load. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
BigMike56

Seems a problem with your host!! I will suggest you to go with WP Super Cache plugin and configure it properly. Avoid using too many plugins. Your Wordpress Theme may also be the culprit for slow wordpress blog. Enable gzip compression on all pages through WP Super Cache. If that still doesn't work. Probably seek a web hosting that is optimized for Wordpress.

savebook, I just looked up WP Super cache and it's instructions say that i should have something called "apache" enabled. Is this the Apache web server? It doesn't go into many details in the instructions. Please help.

You need to use light-weight Wordpress theme and plugins. You need to also use a fast web hosting. Cache plugins also make your website faster.

You may also use Cloudflare for your website.

That's a loaded question, but I would certainly disable any plugins that you're not using and look into using W3 Total Cache and GTmetrix to start.

I haven't seen you mention it, but who is your host? Also, is this a new issue or has your site always been slow? I recently changed hosts and went with a VPS because my shared host simply was not fast enough.

    I would try:

    1. Caching
    2. Reducing image sizes (I know very basic)
    3. Reducing requests made on page load (too many requests will slow down loading greatly)

If you want to go the extra mile, you can setup a CDN for your .css, .js and image files to further reduce your load.

Also, disable all your plugins and use one of the default themes to test how fast your site loads. It may be a plugin or theme issue.

Hope I'm not too late here

Try memcached if you have access to mysql + wp super cache. I used to have a blog on a baby hostgator account and they forced me to install wp super cache because the server (was a shared one) was getting slow because of my website.

Honestly, if you're going to hammer it with traffic - in addition to caching options - I would upgrade my server. If you're on a shared host there is only so much you can do.

Very true. A lot of people tend to forget they are sharing resources when on shared hosting, so there isn't a lot they can generally do for more advanced tweaks.

There are a lot of reasons why your website speed is slow.

    First check your host.
use VPS or dedicated instead of shared hosting.
