Is she paying too much for the search function on her site?

My good friend has a website that is built pretty recent. She has about 15-20 Clients she places on the site (each having their own page). She is marketing the site to get people in those Client areas to contact her Clients for services. I hope this is making sense so far.

She hired someone to add a PHP search function on the site that when a user does a zip code search her Client pages will show up. If there is no results, it goes to a general page.

The code does not look very complex at all. He charged her $750 for the code.

Now, without going into any more detail, and based on the information I gave, do you think my friend was taken advantage of? Is this a fair price? I know there are places I can log onto now and buy a PHP script to do almost exactly like what she got for $100, but I am unsure if there was more to it afterwards.

I am looking for any advice possible to see how others would charge, etc. I am looking for an average charge for that type of service. Any help is appreciated, and no I am not looking for quotes to send over to her. I just want an idea to see if she was taken advantage of, and by how much.

First post, thanks!

It's hard to say for sure without looking at the code, but I'd strongly lean towards yes.

Just going off of the little info you provided, I'd say $100 is a fair price. However, anything is worth whatever someone is willing to pay.

It it's a WordPress site, I'm sure that there's even a few premium plugins that could do something like that. However, once you get into custom PHP coding the price can move up fast. Hard to tell with the info that you provided if she was ripped off.

Honestly though, if she already has 15-20 clients already and coder got the job done, then what does it matter? She'll probably make that money back 10 fold anyways.

People seem to have a hard time spending 1-3 thousand on a site even though lifetime wise the site will probably generate several thousands in sales, if not more.

I am going to suggest, they were not overcharged, ( search functions can be pretty intitricate ) but your friend did not do enough research before getting custom work done. SearchWP would have done that, and its $40.

With how many 10's of thousands of plugins available... a little research goes a long way.
