Pros and Cons of Redesigning Your Website?

Websites that have a modern, professional look, organized structure, and intuitive user interface are more appealing to customers and more likely to convert visitors into sales.

Yet redesigning a website is not as simple as it sounds and can result in a negative experience for users accustomed to the old design.

Although redesigning can result in greater aesthetic appeal and better search engine ranking, it can also result in loss of brand identity and customer loyalty.

What are the pros and cons you've experienced when redesigning a website?

Well, my last website (commercial) after the redesign increase sales by 200%. My main concerns are SE rankings, but you can mantain your listings if the design is not changed drastically.

Site redesign might be a real stress for your business.
There are several bad things you should be ready for:
    - Errors in new scripts
    - Wrong displaying of a new design in different browsers
    - Not-found errors due to wrong redirects or missed files
    - Lower positions in Google SER due to different content layout and formatting.

So, you must constantly monitor all that things (SERP, error logs, statistics) after uploading a new design to server.

I've seen increased sales since I redesigned one of my websites.
It's a good thing to do as you learn more about effective ad
      placement, graphic design, layout, etc.

If I ever change the names of the files, I always keep the old
ones online. But I erase everything in the body and then
redirect the whole page to the new one.

Do not use a meta refresh, that will cost you with Google. Go to your hosting control panel and set a 301 permanent redirect. Google will then transfer your page rank, etc. to the new page instead of dropping the old one out of the index.

I redesign once a year as time allows and as David mentioned keeping the old files on the server or use the same filename with the new design. I also keep all tags, headers, etc. I'm on the top of page 2 in google under ecover design, but am tweaking current design and tags (such as image tags, etc) to push my way over to page one. I think a yearly redo is a good thing for websites. Many many times I see site with outdated 'copyright' statements, etc. It just makes the site look abandoned.

We redesign our website nearly every month. In fact we believe it gets more credit once redesigned because people tend to think we're constantly evolving and growing.

Redesigning is indeed a good thing. The problem is, at least I think, when it comes to redesigning wordpress or changing a theme, there is a drop in the rankings for a bit.

Changes always be good. But you have to be careful with the design, if you only modify some parts in a simple way, your page will looks new and with frecuently activity, but if you make big changes....probably the users will feel strange or disconcerted!!
      Good Luck

I wouldn´t change the site if it wasn´t in deep sheet. Or designed on the 1900s

I redesigned a 600 odd page website and changed the nav, banners, header, footer etc all in php includes. It meant changing ANYTHING on the site was as easy as pie and really helped save so much time/effort.

I do the same thing you do - change it with php includes every so often.

I have 7 includes on every page - All I have to do is change those 7 includes and the site is changed.

I redesigned my site early on, so the impact was all positive. I've been considering another redesign, since I'm not really "feeling" the old design anymore and feel I have more to offer now. I haven't done it yet because I'm a bit nervous about an abrupt change. But my traffic is not so high that I couldn't recover, so I might go through with it eventually.

Redesign helped us include many things which we were unable to update earlier & also make the site fully dynamic as per the latest technology!
The client also loved the new design & looks & helped improve conversions.

Actually, websites that look too professional and perfect convert less than "average" looking websites with good content. This has been tested time and time again...
