Advice On Hiring a Good Web Designer

Hi everyone!

I have been having an issue hiring a decent designer to complete a mock up of my homepage for a business I own.

I have done the wire frame myself and also added a brief of what i want done and a colour scheme to stick to as well as example websites I like.

However I have hired 2 people now over on Freelancer.com and both have produced me something that looks like it belongs in the internet archive from about 20 years ago.

The designs are dull, not to specification and have outdated text, graphics and pretty much poor all round. Certainly not something I could show to clients.

So I am not sure what I am doing wrong perhaps I need to up my budget to get a decent designer to place a bid, currently I set the project for £250 for just the home page mock up done with the intention on hiring the best designer to complete the full site.

Unfortunately I have had two bad experiences now with designers who don't seem like they have any artistic talent at all and rely on either templates or outdated ideas to complete their designs.

So does anyone have any tips on creating the perfect brief to send to a designer so they understand fully what I want and expect?

And, does anyone have experience hiring designers on Freelancer.com or any other sites and what is the best way to go about making sure I get quality designers bidding and not some guy with desktop folder full of templates?

All input is appreciated thank you!

From the "£250" I assume your are from UK. Freelancer is good for a lot of stuff, but I can honestly recommend getting a quote directly from Digital strategy, implementation and evolution | Headscape

I'm no way affiliated with them, but I do know that they will meet your criteria. I'm not sure about your budget, but that's what the quote is for anyway.

...and by the way, you need website developer, not just designer

Hi thanks but actually no I don't need development. I have a coder who works for me.

Will check the link out you sent.

You could post in the Warrior for hire section. Ask for samples of people's work. You should get plenty of responses there.

Look at the website they have that advertises their business.. If you think it's good then go from there. I've seen plenty of web designers that have pretty bad websites!

    One more thing
Most designers do not have information architects because they are very expensive.

I've had dozens of sites made.. In my experience I would browse dozens of sites to get ideas of what you want.. Then take screen shots etc to map out what you want.

If you want someone else to do the creative part and build you a totally unique and amazing website it will get very very expensive..

    Just my 2 cents.

    Hope this helps

I suppose with the answers here and my question it seems to come across like I am brand new to this. That is not the case but thanks for all the input, I disagree with the part that you think it will be very expensive but to be honest my budget is not small for the site.

What I was looking for really was someone with actual real world experience on hiring designers on Freelancer.com and around the price I said, and what were your results? Thanks.

You can find web designers on Freelancer.com or Odesk.com. There are many talented people that offer their services at reasonable price.

    It sounds as if you're a micro-manager.
Realize that good designers won't get anywhere near that attitude.

... unless you have £k+ to spend, that is, not a measly £250.

Before hiring a web designer, it would be better to consider the below factors:
    1.Budget
    2. Clear understanding

    3. Sample of work/Portfolios
    4. Estimated Deadline
    5. Familiar with Functionality your need in your website,

You don't need a web designer, a developer, a coder, etc. You need to approach someone with a clear understanding of what you're looking for, who has a demonstrated background of putting together the type of sharp, modern site that you want. You want me. PM me, and I can email some examples or take a bit of time to talk about your needs. Me speeky goot english!

A good designer know how to sell himself and how to please you. Mostly, they present portfolio and personal works to let you know that you'll be getting the right person for your design needs. Great ones will walk you through with the process, what do you need, what they think best for you and your customers.
