Personally I use both. It depends on whether you want your logo to be vector or bitmap. Illustrator is a vector based postscript drawing program and photoshop is a bitmap image processing and manipulation program. Photoshop is for editing and remaking photographs while Illustrator is for designing graphics with high quality printing in mind. In other words if you only need a logo for your website and don't have plans to print it on other media then Photoshop works well. If however, you plan on printing your logo or brand on flyers, brochures, t-shirts, ball caps etc. then Illustrator is your weapon of choice. Hope this helps.

These days I will always go for the vector design (illustrator) if there isn't a very good reason to make it a bitmap (Photoshop).Bitmaps just aren't scaleable.

Adobes programs aren't exactly the cheapest. There is however free alternative for vector graphis also... Inkscape.

Great answer Paul, I would "thank" you but I don't have enough posts here yet, but thank you for "real" anyway; best answer.

Illustrator if you know how to use it and are creative.. Otherwise use a fiverr gig. But find a high rated one.. I've used one that was really bad and another one that was great!

Illustrator by Adobe is the best software to design logo's from scratch - it outputs a higher picture quality and the graphic is more scalable without distortion.

An inexpensive option for newbie designers is: "AAA Logo" design software - it comes pre-packed with loads of free templates, fonts and effects aimed specifically at designing top quality logo's quickly - it's really simple and easy to use and it's powerful!

    Peace,

I'll say that Photoshop is better than any other program, right now, when it comes to images. Is not easy to use, however, you can read or watch some tutorials, and then start doing something on your own, and finally you will get there, to your perfect logo.

As a web designer I could say Illustrator is pretty much the best tool for logo design, since it's a vector tool and you can have your logo stretched to billboard size without any problem. Photoshop is a good tool as well, however the output is a raster, which means the design is in pixels. When stretched to your heart's content it may show some pixelated edges or becomes a blurry, low quality graphic.

I actually started with a pencil and some paper, before moving onto software.

A few things to bear in mind:

Find a logo which works well in a square format, or as a long line (for profile pictures and cover photos). Look at how Facebook uses just the "F" for some things and then the longer "Facebook" line for others.

Check out which colours go together and choose something memorable.

Try and find a simple design if possible which can then also be used as a Favicon.

In terms of producing the final design, Illustrator works with vector files. This means that an image is worked out based on a mathematical formula. Therefore, you can use your logo at any size and it never goes fuzzy. Depending on how far your business goes, this could include being printed on cars, billboards etc.

Photoshop works with pixels, so if you were to blow it up, it gets to the point where it will start to lose quality. Therefore if you do use photoshop (which I did as I haven't got illustrator), make the image absolutely massive (say 1 metre across at 300dpi). That way, you can keep your original file and save smaller ones resized to your needs.

Quite simply Adobe Illustrator is the best for creating Vectors (the advantage of the is you can stretch them to any size with no quality loss However I find Photoshop more intuitive to use so if you just need a JPG, GIF, PNG of normal proportions then I'd use Photoshop

Trouble is both are quite expensive although I believe student options are available.

    Hi,

In my opinion all the 3 are good to design a logo, but it generally depends on the requirement and the knowledge that you have about all of them, and it also depends upon the requirement or which type of logo you want to make for your site. So, by getting this answer you can decide easily which the best is for you.

Photoshop is good but for logos I prefer Illustrator. its a bit more complex but the resizing capability of illustrator vectors is a plus unlike photoshop that you have to convert the layers to smart objects, in illustrator everything you make can be resized without downgrading the quality.

You may want to use Adobe Illustrator, because it produces vector files which is what most people want, so that they can print the logo in a shirt or put it on their website, etc. without loosing resolution.

Depends if you are doing this for a client or for yourself.

Adobe is the best but also the most complicated. Photoshop is preferred.

If you want to fool around with templates to see what a logo could look like, try SoThink Logo Creator Pro for 30 days. It will give you an 'idea' of what you can do with logos.

If you are working with clients - Adobe/Photoshop.
For yourself - whatever is easy for you.
