What is a sponsored article worth from a good site?

Let me start off by saying that there is no way I'm paying this much. I emailed a very respected blogger, alexa rank is under 500 and he says he has 25,000 RSS subscribers. He wrote me back saying that a sponsored article is $400. I know most people don't get their full asking price, but is he in the right ballpark?

He is definitely in the right ballpark if he has an alexa rank under 500 and has the right kind of audience for you. I would charge at least $1000+ to put a sponsored article on my website and my alexa rank is much lower than that. Is the cost worth it? Maybe if you have picked the right blog to have your post sponsored on!

Sounds about right to me. He's most likely done this before as well if he's a respected blogger therefore that's probably his regular rate.

You can burn 400 pretty quickly in any media offline or online and for something that could stick around and provide quality traffic for a long time the investment is pretty modest. Just do some comparisons to CPM or CPC and be sure to measure the results from the article. If you really doubt the result you may achieve it could do no harm to ask some of the other people who have paid for sponsored articles on the site for feedback. If you had to pay for a billboard on a popular intersection with no guarantee that a viewer would convert you'd get about 5 hours exposure for your money.
