Quick adsense success tip: Dwell time

I've been doing lots of experiments to boost my Adsense earnings. One trick I use that has increased my click through rate quite a bit is boosting DWELL TIME. This is when your visitors STAY on your site for more than 30 seconds. The longer they hang around, the higher the chance they'll click on an ad.

Here is the visit length breakdown before I ran my experiments. Note that the green section denotes visitors who are at my site for 30 seconds or less.

Here is the result after the changes I did:

Here are the list of changes I did that boosted dwell time

Step 1: Write very LONG POSTS - 1500 words is good. This length can be easily broken into smaller chunks (see later steps below) and is also good for SEO. SEO Proof? See How Content Length Affects Rankings and Conversions

Step 2: Put subheadings into your long content. The subheadings must be NATURAL or THEMATIC breaks within the content. You can't just break up the content randomly.

Step 3: Put NEXT PAGE wp tags before each subheading. This breaks up your 1 page post into multiple pages. For my experiments, I noticed that breaks of 100 to 250 words work well BUT it depends on your NICHE. I am in a niche that loves spoonfeeding so I get away with 100 words per page. However, if your niche requires something larger, try 250.

Step 4: Write one sentence per line. Here's the kicker: format your content to be read. The easier it is for the reader to read your stuff, the longer they'll stay around.

Step 5: Write an emotional trigger line per page that PUSHES the reader to click the next page link and see more content.

There ya have it. My step by step approach for boosting your Adsense earnings by increasing your dwell time and decreasing your bounce rate.

You are essentially making your posts more useful to your visitors. That is a great approach, and it's great to see that it's paying off for you. Keep it up!

Put a Youtube video into post is also very effective for decreasing our bounce rate.

This seems counter intuitive to what traditionally works for Adsense Income.

And that is having little distractions on a Site so they will get bored and click on the Ads.

Although I can say I do not like this form of IM , it has been proven to work.

You are creating a lot of content and want to make people stick around instead of getting out of their by clicking adsense.

I may be wrong but that is my take

P.S. I realize it is a Catch 22 in some ways. Create long quality content to attract Google and Organic Traffic but then this could keep people on your Site and become interested instead of clicking adsense

I hear ya. It surprised me too. But playing the traditional Adsense game wasn't working out for me so I decided to experiment.

I didn't want to take my low Adsense figures lying down. I figured I didn't have anything to lose and I'm happy to report that the experiments produced a positive outcome.

The whole point is to get them to stay to consume content and when they find CONTEXTUAL ADS that 'enhance' the content, they click.

Simply trying to get a click for a click's sake doesn't really provide much value. The lesson I learned is to maximize value by SPOONFEEDING content so the user TRUSTS
the content enough to CLICK ADS (that fit the content's theme)

Also, formatting plays a big role in viewers' trusting the content. I learned this from how Brian Dean formats the content on his blog.

Actually, since I also try to get people to join my mailing list, getting them to stay on the site and TRUST the content ENOUGH to enter their email is also a very WELCOME outcome.

Interesting. I tried doing that. While the visit length of THOSE WHO CHOSE TO STAY was much longer, there's a high BOUNCE. Many of my niche visitors just get turned off by video. That's one of the experiments I tried before the current 'content spoonfeed' experiment.

Try it with the video on the second page of the post - that way the visitor is already on your site and not offended by a slow loading page (due to the video). If you bore them on the 2nd pageview they might click away via an ad. And you have solved the bounce rate desaster.

That's a good idea. I'll experiment with that-2nd page video. Should be interesting.

Anyway, as I mentioned earlier, I don't use the 'click on an ad to get away' strategy. Instead,I focus on using content to build TRUST. The higher the trust, the more likely the viewer would click.

Those are great tips! Thank you for sharing them. And you're right, the longer the visitors stay on the page, the more likely it is for them to click on an add. The video idea is also interesting. I think it should work! As long as the video is interesting and not too long, most people will probably get bored if the video is too long.
