There is no difference, the affiliate network provides them if you wany pass on more info.
Lets say you have you two websites A and B - you want track from which webiste conversion came from and which banner. In the reports, you will know exactly where the conversion came from.
So in this case you can use one of the parameters to pass site and another one to pass banner.
Affiliate networks provide these so you can track and optimise properly.

    Hi There,

Any network that using Cake Platform as an affiliate and tracking system will use their s1-s5 parameters to pass data. s1 maximum length is 50 characters and usually used to pass the source id. s2 maximum length is 100 characters and used to pass clickid/transactionid. if your clickid string length is over 100 characters you can pass all to s2 and combine s2-s4 in your postback to get as a whole (#s2##s3##s4#). s5 can hold up to 50 characters if I'm not mistaken and usually stands for IDFA or GAI.

Since Cake is well known in the industry other platform using s1-s5 as an industry standard.

        Hi BigCow,
As other guys mentioned above there is nothing such as "better converting" when it comes to the placeholders. The placeholder job is to store values so a server side will be able to post it back to you when requested.

I will be glad to help you out if you can share what affiliate and media platform you are using. It will be simple enough to build your tracking link in a proper way and explain the setup on an actual link.

You must read more about conversion tracking, placeholders and optimization before you are rushing to manage any campaign.

There is not such thing as a placeholder converting better. They are technical aspects of the affiliate platform and are agnostic to the quality of the traffic, the type of offer and/or marketing.
Depending on the information you need to pass from your traffic source, you will have to use one of the variable.
Note that passing information is not mandatory.

Thanks for the detailed info @michaelbaz
