When is direct linking against the rules? (Affiliate Marketing)

Hello guys, I have been using Commision Junction for a few weeks so far and I have been wondering when exactly is direct linking banned.

I understand direct linking is not allowed in paid search listings (Google, Bing etc.) But if I were to direct link in my ad with a publisher, would it still against the rules. For example, I am planning to buy an advertising space from a blogger directly, without any third party ad networks. If I were to direct link, would it still be against the rules?

From what I understand, direct linking is banned to protect companies from paying excessively for ads on paid search listings etc. Am I right to assume that direct linking is allowed if I purchase advertising with publishers without any ad networks?

  • You cannot run affiliate offers in adwords. But you can surely run with publisher directly.
  • It's mostly banned via the major PPC engines, especially Adwords and BING due to their new "quality score" metric. Also they only want 1 unique URL being advertised on Google which is mostly the merchant himself so any other "direct linkers" aren't allowed to use the same root URL.

    But other than the major PPC platforms you should be able to use direct linking without a problem, just mainly avoid it in Adwords and BING.

  • Questions like this are typically best answered by your AM.
    Normally when someone says direct linking is not allowed I always have a LP and send people to the page prior to the offer (which is good practice anyways)
